An incredibly original tale which juxtapositions hard scifi with warhammer 40k. I love everything about this, even the ending which makes me think about the heretic space marine's view of xenos. I always read about them focussed on fighting the Emperor's force, but yes they would hate xenos still. I didn't think anything would top Ballistchimp's entry, but I've decided to opt for supreme sci fi idea over supreme writing ability (this time).

I can't tell if you got that this was Horus Heresy rather than 40K: hopefully it was clear :)

Thanks for the vote! :D

Well all Space Marines can trace themselves back to the bosom of the Imperium, and fighting the good fight against the universe in the name of the Emperor.

1st evidence of it being in the 30k universe is the mention of Angron and being actively near him. And the 2nd is the fact they rejoice in the service of the Emperor. Combined, it is the 31st milennium :)

Tough choices this month. I've already commented on the stories, so straight to the votes!

1) JD Dunsany: Et In Oblivia Ego
2) Ballistichimp: Echoes
3) Raziel4707: Here Be Dragons
4) Atlantic: Gold Lust

Some great works this month, guys.

1 - Raziel4707- here be dragons

Nice piece, and Slann to boot. Hit my Warhammer Fantasy button right from the off.

2 - Atlantic - gold lust

I have a love of dwarfs, and I think you "got them" in this perfectly. Great stuff.

3 - Mossy Toes - apotheosis

Great to read about machine spirits in more then the usual passing way they are refered to. Nice naval battle too.

4 - Grundi the grot - the last witness

Very imaginative and original. Superbly written.

I'm smacking myself about the head right now, as it's looking to be a neck-and-neck race between me and Tyrant...and I gave him 5 points. :P

Wow. I think more people have voted than actually entered. That's got to be a first.

My excuse was I thought RIAR went the way of 3D Doritos until seeing Mossy's story posted in his uber-thread. I'm going to try and make an effort to further my participation level.

4) I really liked JDD’s weird AdMech story. I liked the truly bizarre and otherworldly reveal of the guardian of the world, and its power to retcon existence.

3) Loving the hypocrisy and sheer ignorant vandalism of the World Eaters there Tyrant. Really interesting juxtaposition at the end; they felt no real wonder, only the crude barbarism of simple warriors.

2) Raz’s story was great, but I felt the ‘+Croak+’ part was not in keeping with the Whf setting imo. Sounded to me like a vox almost. Perhaps simple italics would have sufficed?

1) Mossy, your depiction of a newborn sentience as it dies was brilliantly handled. That’s why I thought it should be first.
Check out my debut fantasy novel from Fox Spirit Books, The Hobgoblin's Herald (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hobgoblins-Herald-R-Aston/dp/1910462047). If you've read it, please rate and review it on amazon; I'd be eternally grateful. The sequel, Eater of Names, is out in 2018, so watch this space.

Erm, I may have spoken too soon. Still, it's not over until the window expires...

Thanks to everyone who's voted for and enjoyed my story! I'm glad that so many of you seem to like it as much as I do!

I waffled all over the place, changing my mind about which stories I liked best and in what order. This was a really good crop of tales, but my votes are...

1. Apotheosis by Mossy Toes
2. Echoes by Ballistichimp
3. Works of Art by Tyrant
4. Even in Death by Phalanx

Looks like Mossy is really running away with it this month.

Thanks to those who have voted for me. My votes will be along shortly.

In the meantime, here's an announcement.

The prompt word for the next competition is:

Corruption

Have fun with that. :D

Of the contests I have participated in, I think this month was the hardest when it came down to voting. The overall level of quality between all of the entries is ridiculously close. I don't have any useful comments that haven't already been written. Good work all!

Here is how I'm voting (though any of these stories could sit on the top)

1. Echoes - Chimp
2. Apotheosis - Mossy
3. Here Be Dragons - Raz
4. Et in Oblivia Ego - JDD
