Aye! I'm not a chaos collector, but they be some damn fine miniatures! Got my eye on a few space marine bits (sternguard, possibly Calgar and definitely the Emperor's champion as an alternate general for my non-codex army) and I can't wait to see more new-release stuff in finecast.

If only they would offer Calgar as a single model. Please, GW? Pretty please?

If I was still playing I would definitely get the BT Sword Brethren, the Jump Chaplain, the SM Vanguard Squad, Astorath and Dante. And then remove the BT insignias and play them all for my BA successor chapter :D

I hope they'll release some of the other Inquisitor models aside from Coteaz; seeing as the metal model of the Inquisitor lady with the impressive beehive hairdo has multiple weapon options that come randomly in the blisters, a frame with all the options on them would work quite well for that model.

Jack: How did you make that? That's awesome!

Also, Pyro, what was the model like? (Aside from heretical, blasphemous and betrayal of your Silver Skulls roots?)

@Jack - that's awesome!! LOL!!!

The model's LOVELY. Really. The detail is outstanding. And I may as well complete my fall to Chaos. I have to say that I'm a fan of the new packaging compared to the old metal packs. At least you can see what your model is meant to look like. Seriously, I'm rubbish. Huron's arm would have ended up attached to his head if I was left to my own devices.

Why on earth are they producing that Mannfred model in Finecast? It's pretty much the most hideous figure Citadel have ever produced!

I just got myself and Emperor's Champion and converted him to represent Gaius from Hammerhand. Absolute joy to build, and so very easy to prepare and convert.

Finecast has my wholehearted approval. Now bring the resin Greater Daemons!

Re: Finecast Miniatures

Postby BL Graeme » Tue May 31, 2011 1:40 pm

I picked up the resin Fellowship of the Ring yesterday.

Main reason for getting them first is that they're all models that I have painted before at least twice (I worked for GW retail during the Lord of the Rings years; I painted all the LotR store models and did them all for myself too), so they are a good point of comparison for me.

The reaction: mostly very impressed.

The level of detail is definitely improved over the metals. Particular delights:
Gandalf's staff
Legolas's quiver
Boromir's horn (snigger)
Gimli's chainmail

The Frodo in the kit is the one that originally came with the metal Ringwraith on Fell Beast, putting the ring on his finger, and you can actually see the ring on the Finecast sculpt.

I also like how easy it is to bend misshapen parts back to the way they should be. Aragorn's sword came quite badly bent, but a minute in a bowl of hot water was enough to get it where it should be.

Cleaning the models up was also a joy - the mould lines come off even easier than on plastic models, and don't seem to be as pronounced as on plastic anyway.

My niggles:

The resin seems to be somewhat brittle, making the models very fragile. Just clipping the hobbits from their frames, the tabs cracked, and a part of Frodo's foot came away. (He's now Frodo of the Nine Toes...)

There are some minor miscasts in there, notably the tip of Gandalf's sword. It's probably an isolated case, but it's irritating.

Anyway, I have them assembled (took about two hours to clean them all, glue them to the bases, and apply sand to said bases, covering the nasty Frodo's foot issue in the process!) and undercoated, and will begin to apply paint tonight. I will post a progress report on how they are to paint later in the week. Maybe with pictures.

For the interested, the models you get in the new box are:
Gandalf, Boromir and Pippin from the original 2001 "Fellowship of the Ring" metal set.
Aragorn and Gimli from "Heroes of the West".
Frodo from the metal Fell Beast box.
Legolas from "Heroes of Helm's Deep", with the cool shoulder armour.
Sam from the "Gollum, Sam and Frodo" blister pack.
Merry from "Attack at Weathertop"

Interestingly, these are more or less the models I would have chosen for a "best of" Fellowship box...I'd maybe have switched Boromir for the "Breaking of the Fellowship" model, but that's it...

The Wrath struggles somewhat to give a monkeys about finecast but will go and see what all the fuss is about this weekend anyway. Unfortunately I'm not after any of the CSM models they've done yet (the raptors may be more detailed but they're still awful looking models) so I doubt I'll be buying any.

Randomly, I really took umbrage to the tone of voice the GW blog ('astronomicon', whatever) used when bigging up the models. "which finecast model will you buy first?" was the question repeatedly posed, which got under my skin, seemed really presumptuous and immediately put me off the idea of buying any at all. But then I am a moody git.

Moody Wrath.

Oh yes, that could be worth it, although hopefully they'll be less cartoony than the current ones. They're on my list to buy, I think I might hold off thinking about it and wait to see if there's finecast.

As a Dark Eldar/Salamanders/Tau player who's mighty short on time, is there any Finecast model you lot'd especially recommend for my purposes? I'm more'n willing to have a crack at converting something from another model line, but as I've been out of the models side of things for a while, I'm not wholly clued up on what's available.

So, suggestions?

I think the Dark Eldar have the best part of the finecast for the three armies you mentioned (no Salamanders that I think of).

Archons, Sucumbui, Incubi, Mandrakes and some special characters depending what you want for the army.

After spending all weekend trying and failing to assemble a steam tank (the Mk2 metal version from about 2001) the idea of a less heavy material is rapidly growing on me. But I'm not sure I could bring myself to spend the amount of money such a figure would inevitably cost- finding a reasonable price on eBay was bad enough. Also I know the degree of satisfaction in picking the thing up will be immeasurably increased (once I've finally got the damn thing assembled) if it weighs half a metric tonne.
