BL Submissions 2018: The Aftermath

Postby HungryP » Tue Apr 10, 2018 1:24 pm

As the window closes, let’s take stock of who’s in, and hopefully track some progress soon.

I made two submissions myself, both with similar themes. I couldn’t leave it at just one, as a draft of the first is already written, and I was in the process of typing the submission for the second during the last window when I was told to hold off in favour of focusing on the story I was working on at the time, which died before it saw the light of day.

Good luck to all!

Well good luck. I basically forgot all about it and then banged in a couple of hastily tweaked submissions that I had intended for a previous window but never actually submitted... whether this is a good or a bad idea I do not know!! Either way they are both stories I want to write so if I get lucky then it will be a pleasure!

Best of luck, all!

According to some people on FB, rejection letter emails have begun being sent. Not seen mention of any acceptances yet, but it is good to hear that the rejections are timely.

Well, not "good", but it's useful to get back quickly, I understand. Tearing the plaster off quickly and all that.

With luck, we'll see a few acceptances from within the crowds we behold, as well as shining lights on new faces from further afield!

Got a rejection. I assume it's for my first submission, but there were no details, just a no thanks. Still plan on doing a revision on the draft I've got written though; that's how we get better!

Got a second rejection today (three months after the first). I submitted three stories all within a three day period (one a day). So all I can think is that they get printed out a put in a pile and then when an editor has time they take one off the pile...so completely random when you get a response.

Of course I can dream that they are deliberating and passing them around and that means my third story is still in with a chance LOL

Well at least we know for sure that multiple submissions will each be rejected separately. I guess there's still the glimmer of hope. Thanks, Duke! It would have been nice to know which submission was rejected though.

Given what I've heard of Black Library's processes, and those of publishers in general, it is possible that the editors would chip away at the pile, then take what they like to the group for further evaluation. Either way, chin up to those with subs still out, and those who've been rejected. There's always more stories to be told!

So the rejection notices are still going out? I'm actually quite relieved by that... I've never had a rejection notice before (probably because I've never sent in a submission before! ) and was quite disappointed that I hadn't got one.
Hopefully it'll turn up at some point... :D

Finally got my third and final rejection...oh well I was dreaming there for a moment!

One of the BL editors said on Twitter they have only just finished reading all submission and there were over 3.5k so the odds ain't great. Pretty amazing they even do this. Great way to engage the community (marketing initiative).

Thus far I have only had 1 rejection... I'm sure I submitted two submissions.... shall I cling to false hope for just a little longer?! :?

The editor responsible (that replaced Llewellyn-Wells after she went over to Bad Robot?) is on Twitter these days - might be worth popping the question directly. I forget their name, but it should be about somewhere!

If something's missed, even just an email unsent in an outbox, they might be able to give a quick answer!
