Deathwatch: Bolthole Above Castobel

Postby Xisor » Sat Jan 28, 2012 9:33 pm

Hello all.

Cast
- Xisor's NPCs
- ???

Setup
The thinking is this:
- 500xp into Rank 2
- Any makeup (discuss amongst yourselves) for the team
- 19 +d5 Renown
- Requisition: As yet undisclosed.

The idea: You form a Deathwatch team and we story that out, starting from 'nids on Castobel and working the story from there. I have a fair plan for stuff that'll happen as it chugs along, don't worry.

The 'Starting Position'

The Tyranid Invasion on Castobel has had its back broken. The orbital fleets have dispersed and are being dealt with by crusade forces in seek and destroy operations. There are hordes loose on the surface and, of course, the Crusade itself is well afoot.

You've all been on deployment in the Castobel system, fighting supporting actions against the Great Devourer, dispersed through Imperial forces in the system. With the invasion-lines on the main Hive Cities were defeated, in collaboration with the primary Deathwatch team, the individual Marines have been returned to orbit to be grouped into service to begin purging operations against the remaining Tyranid forces. The primary Deathwatch team have been redeployed by Inquisitorial request to another system, leaving only the few of yourselves as the remaining Deathwatch force accompanying this particular system.

To that end, the initial foray(s) will likely be to curtail the Tyranid threat and ensure the Crusade is able to bring Castobel back into the crusade properly.

Background on Castobel: It's a Hive World, the only one which remained wholly loyal to the Imperium throughout the Imperium's absence from the Jericho reach. The Tyranid invasion arrived here shortly after contact was re-established. The world, though loyal, has still not been properly repatriated to the Imperium.

So, anyone interested at this stage whilst I figure out some other details?

Ditto. Any ideas concerning which chapters you want/do not want? What about Blackshields?

All chapters welcome, I think. Blackshields...I'm iffy on. They're nice, but they're somewhat difficult to work with, especially in the rarefied "I'm Alpharius" literary climate we live in. ;)

I'd ask folks to think twice on Blackshields, but ultimately they're welcome.

How will this work? Will we be RPing on MSN? Also, would we see a return of RP sessions getting a proper literary write up (as we did for some of our earlier roleplay arcs)?
Check out my debut fantasy novel from Fox Spirit Books, The Hobgoblin's Herald (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hobgoblins-Herald-R-Aston/dp/1910462047). If you've read it, please rate and review it on amazon; I'd be eternally grateful. The sequel, Eater of Names, is out in 2018, so watch this space.

Well, I have a ready built Blackshield, but I don't need to play him, if you'd rather have a more conventional character. With First Founding, there are enough interesting options to explore.

As said, Lil', if after second thought you're still happy with him, go for it. If not...yes, the First Founding is rather alluring. :)

It'll be by post on the forums, so a collaborative thread on here, and almost certainly quite slow moving (even compared to the MSN ones). But it should see us getting more of a write-up, absolutely.

just to make sure I'm on the right track as I build my Ultramarine Devestator fellow. 5500xp to spend yes to get 500xp into rank 2?

Yep.

'Basic' starts at 12,000.
The 1000xp for starting characters takes you to start of Rank 1 properly, at 13,000.
Then there's 4000xp to spend through rank 1.
Then finally at Rank 2, you've got 500xp to spend to take you to 17,500xp.
8-)

You're correct.

Background:
Pertinax Vespus was born shortly after the battle of Macragge and his childhood was a harsh one as the military academies of the world pushed to gather more and better aspirants to replenish the grievous losses of the Ultramarines. Neither naturally aggressive and boisterous nor skilled in one on one combat or sword drill Pertinax was often the but of his fellow students jokes and would often face extra punishment details by his tutors for various shortcomings. However he remained in the academies year after year, surviving many culls of students because of his keen mind and grasp for theoretical warfare and he managed through much study to be able to augment his natural shooting ability with the capability of predicting the flight and movement of his targets. In his eleventh year he was one of only 5 of the initial class of 37 to be submitted by the academy to undertake the trials of the Ultramarines.

Upon passing the trials he became an aspirant for the Chapter and his Scout Sergeant Tellion nicknamed him "the scholar" due to his eager reading of all available battlefield data that would come his way in the field. The name stuck and the quiet and reserved Marine soon found Tellion and his subsequent sergeants would use him as a sounding board as his reputation for knowing pertinent facts for any situation grew within the chapter.

It was some seventy years into his career when as a member of the 9th reserve company he began to promote alterations to training drills which caused an increase in accuracy rates amongst his squad and then the company as a whole. This led to his Captain suggesting he take up a position as a Scout Sergeant where his growing knowledge and keen warfare theory could be used more effectively. It wasn't long until his Scouts were vying for Tellion's in the 10th company competitions from bolter drill to training manoeuvres. The Chapters leadership became keenly aware of his talents with some suggesting him as a replacement for the master scout, or potential Captain. However leadership was not something that came easy for Pertinax he was not one capable of inspiring men nor charming or invoking a close loving bond. His brothers felt no greater affection to him than was required of them by duty. Even his own Scouts recognised his authority and his wisdom but saw him as a distant teacher rather than a great leader. It seemed likely that this mind that was potentially capable of great tactical feats may not ever become fully utilised by the chapter.

That was when the Deathwatch made a request for further members of the Ultramarines to take up service. The Chapter Master mused on his decision and discussed it with his Captains for weeks, before deciding to send Pertinax. The thinking being that service in the Deathwatch would improve and round out Pertinax, he would have to form close bonds with Astartes from various chapters with various temperaments, they would not be Scouts following him blindly but need to be won over by his reasoned wisdom. He would experience leadership of squads in more adverse and challenging conditions than the 10th company would offer him and if he did not return a capable leader he would return with added knowledge and he was already proven to be more than capable at passing that knowledge on for the betterment of the Chapter.

I don't want to fill in to many details of the career in the deathwatch up to the starting point, I don't know the immediate history prior to this is in Xisor's head, either way I'm in a team with you lot.

Ok, after changing my mind, again, I'm going to build a Wolf Scout. ^^

Holger and Pertinax - get ready to rumble! Both characters are looking good on paper, and I'm positive they're good well enough to mesh together nicely/entertainingly in-game.

If anyone else should wish to join in, speak up and ready yourselves soon. I have a briefing which I'm pretty much ready to supply to you all, should you be ready(ish) to get going.

Any questions & comments in the meantime, do shout and I'll try to answer promptly.

Kindest regards,
Captain Slow.

@Maugan Ra: Oh noes, not again (j/k here  )
Another paranoid Dark Angel... Those always tend to lead to friendly fire accidents. :P

In my other DW game ,we had an incident involving a heavy flamer and then an almost accident involving a rocket launcher... gave my Ultramarine grey hairs.

Of course, Holger's hair is already white.

Mustard - As a Tech-Priest, I'm fairly sure you get Speak (Techna-Lingua) for free. And I know that Deathwatch get Forbidden Lore (Xenos) for free as well.
