Background:
Pertinax Vespus was born shortly after the battle of Macragge and his childhood was a harsh one as the military academies of the world pushed to gather more and better aspirants to replenish the grievous losses of the Ultramarines. Neither naturally aggressive and boisterous nor skilled in one on one combat or sword drill Pertinax was often the but of his fellow students jokes and would often face extra punishment details by his tutors for various shortcomings. However he remained in the academies year after year, surviving many culls of students because of his keen mind and grasp for theoretical warfare and he managed through much study to be able to augment his natural shooting ability with the capability of predicting the flight and movement of his targets. In his eleventh year he was one of only 5 of the initial class of 37 to be submitted by the academy to undertake the trials of the Ultramarines.
Upon passing the trials he became an aspirant for the Chapter and his Scout Sergeant Tellion nicknamed him "the scholar" due to his eager reading of all available battlefield data that would come his way in the field. The name stuck and the quiet and reserved Marine soon found Tellion and his subsequent sergeants would use him as a sounding board as his reputation for knowing pertinent facts for any situation grew within the chapter.
It was some seventy years into his career when as a member of the 9th reserve company he began to promote alterations to training drills which caused an increase in accuracy rates amongst his squad and then the company as a whole. This led to his Captain suggesting he take up a position as a Scout Sergeant where his growing knowledge and keen warfare theory could be used more effectively. It wasn't long until his Scouts were vying for Tellion's in the 10th company competitions from bolter drill to training manoeuvres. The Chapters leadership became keenly aware of his talents with some suggesting him as a replacement for the master scout, or potential Captain. However leadership was not something that came easy for Pertinax he was not one capable of inspiring men nor charming or invoking a close loving bond. His brothers felt no greater affection to him than was required of them by duty. Even his own Scouts recognised his authority and his wisdom but saw him as a distant teacher rather than a great leader. It seemed likely that this mind that was potentially capable of great tactical feats may not ever become fully utilised by the chapter.
That was when the Deathwatch made a request for further members of the Ultramarines to take up service. The Chapter Master mused on his decision and discussed it with his Captains for weeks, before deciding to send Pertinax. The thinking being that service in the Deathwatch would improve and round out Pertinax, he would have to form close bonds with Astartes from various chapters with various temperaments, they would not be Scouts following him blindly but need to be won over by his reasoned wisdom. He would experience leadership of squads in more adverse and challenging conditions than the 10th company would offer him and if he did not return a capable leader he would return with added knowledge and he was already proven to be more than capable at passing that knowledge on for the betterment of the Chapter.
I don't want to fill in to many details of the career in the deathwatch up to the starting point, I don't know the immediate history prior to this is in Xisor's head, either way I'm in a team with you lot.
