So folks, any suggestions for July's RiaR theme? As you may know, I am your new benevolent competition runner, so I'll be ultimately picking the theme.

Though, 'Reign' seems an appropriate theme word in this case... :P

"The Old King is Dead"

Oooh, I like that one. The phrase is evocative, but is also generic enough to allow for many variations upon a theme.

The King is dead, long live the King.

The only thing faster than light is monarchy. :P

How about Succession? That would be a word, and cover the same thing.

I'm liking this. The whole asking people what the prompt word should be thing. Why didn't I think of that?

And 'Succession'. Yes. That could work very nicely. :)

Succession seems likely to get the go ahead so far.

Agreeing with Liliedhe- Haunted's an apt one. Or fear.

Maybe stick with a Halloween theme a little more. How about Mask(s)?

Not a suggestion, but a quick question, and this seemed the best place to ask. What's the rules/guidelines on profanity? And by that, I mean actual real-world profanity, because using 40k-isms leeches the impact and thus defeats all point of using the expression in the first place. I ask because I was planning on revisiting Verbal for a few pieces, probably in here (he's been in a couple of previous RiaRs, if anyone recalls) and his idiom tends to be rather coarse and in-the-gutter, and I've found that the tales I write from his perspective lose a bunch of their... attitude, I suppose you could call it, when I go back in editing and censor/mask the swearing. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that profanity is by any means necessary, but replacing it with 'oh biscuits' levels of nonsense made-up 'swearing' just doesn't feel right for the character in question.

So yeah, are we PG-13 here, or are we grown-up?

What he said. When I write real world, I HATE having to censor myself.

My understanding has always been that we're PG-13 (or BL's version of it - shit's okay, but the f and c words not).

But, do you know what?

It's not my call anymore!

So, is the RiaR: December going to be a Candlemas theme?

Snow? White? Dwarf? (I'm kidding on that last one)
Gift? Present? Change? Winter? Season? Cold?
Numb? Wrapped? Red? Green? Tree? Fornication? (Again, kidding.)
Celebration? Pudding? Fire? Nuts? Night? Kinship?
Others? Warmth? Light? Dark? Angel? Choir?
Stars? Bells? Holly? Debt? Money? Games? Time?

A thought I had the other day - assuming this competition is still under way. What if we brought the critique and pseudo-workshop angle of RIAR more to the fore? It would perhaps put a more collaborative spin on the competition, which can only be a good thing. As is, the critique is valuable, but little can be done with it within the competition other than keeping it in mind for the next month.

It wouldn't even need much change, even something as simple as adding an extra week between submissions and voting as an 'edit' period, where each entry gets the chance for one edit after reviewing what the other entrants have said about it. After that week, the final edits of each piece are collated and voted on, perhaps with a fourth 'bonus' vote for 'Most Improved'.

What do folks think?
