“They shall not love you, nor tolerate your presence. You are the shades; the images of shame and loathing in the collective psyche of your races. We must protect the galaxy from itself. You shall be hated, my saviours, but we will continue for we must. Each hand is turned against the other in this universe. Our races squabble and war with one another for all eternity, and they will never come to consensus, and nor must they. Conflict makes the galaxy strong. Our people must be strong, for my masters, long dead, have seen what is to come; the mirror devils risen, the annihilator ascendant and the abomination coiling in from all sides. We must be the unseen hand guiding the galaxy to ultimate survival.”
- Attributed to the Watchman.

Hello guys, and welcome to the revived ‘Hated saviours’ Group Story discussion thread and, I suppose, the ‘mythos centre’ for the Hated Saviours in general. I intend for this thread to be a place where ideas for short stories can be batted around by the Hated saviour writers before writing. Also, this thread will be an opportunity for new Hated saviour authors to join the group (more on this later in this post).

First, a little background on the setting of the Hated saviours I think, for new authors as well as the old gang:

###

This group setting/mythos is based around a band of eccentric renegades and outcasts from the mainstream of 40K society, who have been gathered together by the imposing figure known simply as ‘the Watchman’. The Watchman was the first being recruited for the Hated saviours. He was once known as Hormann Darvius, a brutal and ruthless Inquisitor, who died when a virus weapon was detonated inside a vessel he was fighting upon. His body destroyed, his soul was captured by the arcane powers of ‘the Masters’. They wished to resurrect him as a human, but they were forced to utilise the first compatible flesh puppet available to them; which happened to be the corpse of a genestealer lying frozen in the void. Darvius was reborn as the watchman, a monstrous human who didn’t truly become a decent human being until he was placed in the alien flesh. He is in constant pain and forever wracked by unnatural tyranid urges.

‘The Masters’ were a group of Necrontyr who had managed to preserve themselves and escape the destruction of their race by the C’tan, by stealing a mighty vessel now known only as the Saviour, a truly vast edifice. The Saviour is a titanic construct many miles across in every direction. It is a tangled mess of scavenged technologies from across the galaxy; from jokaero laser batteries to gauss annihilators and complex teleporter fields, it has everything, and is so large, hardly any of it has been explored even by its own crew.

The Watchman was instructed by his dying masters to gather a retinue of specialists and outcasts from every corner of the galaxy, who could aid him in a quest to strengthen the galaxy so it may survive the coming wars with the C’tan, Tyranids and Chaos itself. They take no credit for their actions, and sometimes their actions are not seen as heroic by those they manipulate and interfere with; sometimes they might be saving a world from invasion, other times they are sabotaging a Tau/human peace conference which would have lead to a great defeat in the future for both sides. The Saviours, as outsiders, can see the bigger picture. They can see what is needed to save the galaxy. They are also one of the few genuinely benevolent factions; they want to preserve the most life, regardless of species. If in the short term, this means some people must die, this is a burden they must bear, and this only increases the loathing every other race and faction has for them.

The Watchman is constantly gathering new recruits for his elite band of weirdoes, but there are a few characters who have stuck around with him for longer than most.

One is the enigmatic human Cyd Taeron. He is ancient, cynical and immortal. Though he is unaware of his true nature, he is in fact a Sensei; one of the Emperor’s natural born sons. Yet, behind his playfully sarcastic exterior, he is haunted by his dying spouse, Rion, who is held in stasis in the Vaults of the Saviour (yet her soul seems bound to his bolt pistol... it is all very complex...).

The second is Arel Bladesong; a rogue Autarch of Biel-Tann, who was banished from her craftworld for refusing to massacre a human colony world on the demented whim of her sister. Her emotions are as controlled as one would expect of a craftworlder, and she wields a rail-rifle.

Tzu is a rogue Imperial callidus, and is trying to learn how to be a decent human being (he can make himself look and sound human convincingly, but he himself is a cold blooded killer. He;s working on that...).

Tio and Tax are two friend recruited by the Watchman at once. Tio is a geneticist Tau, who went rogue from her sept and became briefly a disciple of Bile. However, once she realised his true and dreadful purpose, she abandoned the monster-maker, and fled from him with the aid of her human mutant ally Tax. She acts as the medical specialist of the group, and also helps administer the Watchman’s pain medication, which eases the pain of his very existence (for the creature darvius should not exist, as it is a strange corpse-construct animated by a dead man’s soul...). Tax is arguably the most normal of the group, despite his repulsiveness. He also seems to love heavy weapons and vehicles.
###
The hated saviours setting does not function like a normal group story. There is no co-authored story (or rather, there does not have to be. HS writers can write one if they wish). Instead, each author is allowed to write their own stories within the setting, using the characters for various situations and missions. Don’t think of it as a single story, but more like a series of episodes in a TV series. We could of course weave an arc into these stories if you want to, but we’ll discuss that in this thread.

Now, this thread is also a recruitment thread for new boltholer writers for this. I want to add 3 new Hated saviours to the watchman’s crew. If you are interested in this project, and want to have a character in it, please post up a bio of a cool character here. The advice for creating a saviour is this; make your character strange, unique, and someone who wouldn’t be tolerated in the mainstream of their faction, or a character who doesn’t really fit a traditional role. Also, no saviour would ever be a supporter of the Nids, Chaos or necrons (but they can have a history with them if that’s par tof your idea).

Those guys we pick would then have to write a short story featuring this character, and how they were recruited by the Hated saviours in the first place.

Cheers and fight the good fight my brethren! :D

SWEET!

So the team is back, eh? Awesome! *explodes* Good lord, I've missed this story!

Are we still going to be doing collabs in addition to our own shorts? I remember the old Avius Barrus story, a shame we never finished that one.

I think we're still doing collaborative stuff as well, Bloodhawk, so we might be able finish off Avius Barrus (if I remember correctly, we did get a fair bit done). I certainly wouldn't mind doing so.

Maugan, Rhamah, LL, your thoughts?

Hmmm, I have a character to add up. It'll take me a little bit, so consider this a reserve spot till then.

Okay here he is, meet the Imperator!

The Imperator

You made me.

Made me to kill and burn and crush.

To exterminate the alien races that gathered round you in your youth.

I battled against the limitless hosts of the Eldar Empire and brought their crystal spires crashing down.

I stomped the hordes of Krork into the bloodied mud and burned their worlds to ashes.

The Tellarian Republic I shattered so utterly they still feel the pain of it to this day.

For six thousand years I fought for you, earning triumphs uncounted and victories immeasurable.

And when by your arrogance, when the end came and the steel tide rose against you, I stayed loyal.

I saved you, held their host fast while the schemes of the Anathema birthed hell and sundered space.

And out of a thousand, thousand engines, I alone remain alive.

You made me for war and a war is what you have here.

You are fortunate, for when it comes to war there is none better at it than I.
…..
His full name is ‘Autonomous War Engine Pattern Mike, Subsign: Golf Juliet Charlie’. He is old, he is lethal and he is mad.

Built from a fusion of a digitally uploaded infant’s mind and a machine of living metal, ‘Caesar’ as he insists upon being called is a two hundred and forty foot high walking avatar of death, a Consul Class War Titan of a now vanished human civilization. He was created early in the 20th Millennia by the then dominate human culture as the epitome of mechanized violence and served for sixth millennia in countless battles against alien races, many of them exterminated at his hands. Upgraded constantly, he commanded thousands of other Titans and millions of human troops in the last battle of the hideous Iron War that brought humanity to its knees just before the onset of Old Night. Caesar’s army fought an innumerable horde of rogue war machines to a standstill as the gigantic warp-storms caused by the birth of Slaanesh overwhelmed a quarter of the galaxy. However, Caesar’s loyalty had as much to do with his anger of being passed over for the high command of a planned invasion of the Eldar Empire in favor of the hyper-AI ‘Morningstar’ as it did for any love of mankind.

All life, mechanical and biological, was scoured from the planet and Caesar alone survived, wrapped inside the supportive cocoon of a repair unit after having being damaged during his slaying of an avatar of the so-called ‘Morningstar’ Hyper-AI that led the rebellious machine armies. Trapped alone for several millennia, an intellect already characterized by boundless arrogance, extreme egoism and the bizarre social-sexual structure present within the sentient Titan divisions was driven to complete madness to sanity to madness again several times.

Eventually his colossal repair pod was found by smugglers and from there made its way into the Savior by various sundry and bizarre events. He is more than willing to fight for the Saviors, primarily because he is a weapon and one that insists upon being used, regardless of who is pulling the trigger. Caesar has little to no loyalty to humanity, viewing the Imperium and its inhabitants as bastard savages who have brought ruin upon mankind’s empire via rampant millennialism and religious fanaticism. Those who value their existence should not point out that Caesar still holds and is indeed high priest of the bizarre and labyrinthine spiritual belief system of the long vanished Titan divisions. He is currently attempting to use the repair pod, which makes use of an immense system of nanobots, to create a new titan as a companion and mate to breed a new legion. Exactly how he plans to do this or how Titans ‘breed’ is something he is not willing to explain.

Due to his immense size and the need for stealth on many missions, Caesar’s body is often left behind. However, he can easily make ‘flesh clones’ from a small laboratory located in his right calf. The clones are cybernetic puppets of varying gender, age, race and appearance that a small fragment of the Titan’s mind operates. He is somewhat clumsy in such a state and dislikes the lack of planet cracking weaponry and vulnerability to pain being what he calls ‘fleshed’ entails, however Caesar dislikes being left behind and thus out of conflict worse. His knowledge of social and behavioral norms (and indeed, many other skill sets ranging from infantryman to cook) is textbook perfect, but severely lacking in practice leading to behavior ranging from the rude to the bizarre.

The rare occasions Caesar’s real body are allowed to fight are ones of soul scorching ferocity. He is fully capable of physically demolishing a demi-legion of the lesser titans employed by the Mechanicus, his massive weaponry and shield power coupled with an unmatched intellect for engine war making him a nigh unbeatable opponent. The ‘real’ Caesar also possesses an incredible ability to hack into machines possessing an advanced machine spirit and turn them to his side, as befits a cybernetic organism with a CPU the size of a baneblade tank. Indeed, it was his talent for hacking mechanical devices that first attracted the Savior’s attention….

are you still accepting possible writers? I've been thinking of a pair of characters (ogryn and human) that would fit together closesly if that is acceptable.

We are indeed, Commander Shadow.

Also, Marius, Caesar sounds, well, a little bit nuts. I admit that the idea of a titan on the Saviours' side may seem grossly overpowered, but considering how unpredictable he is and the fact that he uses flesh puppets instead of going 'full titan' all the time is a point in his favour. It's good to see him back in action after Imperator, though.*

*I realise now that he's probably where I got the idea for Yamzarat Machtoro from, you know.

I was thinking that Anelia, the Hollow Child, was pretty cool. Would be interesting if her perspective was developed a bit more.

I've become a fan of this project. Would love to see more, whatever characters are used.

Oh and Caesar would probably fit in with the other weird war engines that roam the saviour. There's security drones and all sorts of weird servitor things. Also, the necorntyr 'screamer-engine', which I was going to mention in 'Family First' but edited it out for brevity.

The Screamer engine has an original Necrontyr name, but the masters are dead, so none know it.

Darvius calls it the screamer-engine, due to the horrific wails he constant exhales via unknown means. It looks like a tangled mass of writhing mechanical tentacles and pincers, around a smooth polygon centre, edged in strange runes.

It was a weapon in the old wars in heaven, before the great betrayal taht turned the Necorntyr into the mosnters they are now. It was an attempt to counter old one magicks through technological means. Using captured souls and the latest of Necorntyr science. It was designed to kill warp entities. It does this when near warp rifts. It literally rips the warp entities out of the warp, and incarnates them. Not mere manifestation, but warp energy is actually converted into matter, and hence the daemon/warp beast becomes real, and the impossible flesh destroys itself. However, the mewling aborted daemon-things are forever merged with the screamer, and it is a horror to behold. An entire wing of the saviour is devoted to keeping the thing contained. It can't be allowed to roam free, otherwise it would attempt to activate the warp drives, and enter the warp. It also likes to feed off psyker souls and gellar field fuel, which makes it a profound nuissance.

However, it is lethal around mid-level and low-level daemons, as it literally fishes them from the warp. As it does this, it gets ever more mental and terrible.

And, its screams grow ever louder.

So we've got Cuddles the Necrontyr Death machine, Chuckles the Wonder-Nid (Avius Barrus), the Baby, and we can probably think up a silly name for Caesar to annoy him with.

Any other wildly inappropriate names for things that we can think of while we're here?

Well, you have the female Magus and the other two stealer cultists from a genestealer cult Darvius accidentally started once.

You also have Anelia the Hollow Child, and the Hyper Violent Barghesi, and those horrible plants in 'feeding time'...
