Project: Jailbreak.

Postby Raziel4707 » Wed Dec 28, 2011 11:25 am

I’d like to gauge possible interest in a group story. The idea is pretty simple, and it goes thusly:

Jailbreak.

The radical Inquisitor Corbus Monn has spent an illustrious career in the service of the Ordo Hereticus, hunting down those who would seek to unleash the forces of Chaos within the Imperium itself. He is a trusted and well liked man who has the ear of Lord Inquisitor Charron and a wealth of resources, agents and weapons at his disposal.

But Inquisitor Monn has a secret.

His career has seen him come up against a vast array of foes and he has, from time to time, had to stretch the rules a little in the prosecution of his duties. At first he told himself that it was just the once and was so minor an infraction that it didn’t bear mentioning to his superiors, but over time it got worse. Deals were struck with aliens, weapons forged in the fires of corrupted planets were brought to bear against their owners and small evils were allowed to pass him by in pursuit of a bigger picture known only to him. Convinced of his righteousness and yet deeply ashamed of his actions, Monn has accumulated quite a collection of artefacts and weapons, not limited to the inanimate. Hidden deep within an asteroid facility which is designated as a “research facility” lies a prison complex where he keeps the Eldar, Tau, heretics, psykers and all manner of other creatures both fair and foul that Monn has utilised in the past. Most of his one-time allies are dead, but those he deems potentially useful he keeps imprisoned in purpose built cells that were supposed to hold them for as long as he needed.

Unfortunately for Monn, he had reckoned without his interrogator.

Marneus Raxell was ever an ambitious child and his parents nurtured his ruthless nature, assuring themselves that such a trait was necessary to succeed in a violent universe. Under the tutelage of Inquisitor Monn he has flourished, but his tendency towards vicious pragmatism and his exposure to prohibited knowledge has left him far more radical than his master has realised. Now ready to take the mantle of a full Inquisitor, Maxell sees Monn as a potential threat to him in the future as he is the only one who might have an inkling of his own radical nature. Deciding that simply murdering him might be politically unwise he sneaks down to the asteroid one night and, using blades and weapons of xenos design, slaughters the staff who work there and disconnects the power supplies and failsafes, unlocking all the doors and releasing the xenos held within.

Monn is oblivious until it’s far too late and every xenos has his or her own agenda. Will you simply flee, or will you try to take out Monn? Will you see Maxell as the main threat or do you have a score to settle with another former inmate?

There’s a reasonable amount of scope here for a relatively small, neat little group story. You can be any race you like (Tyranids included) and one of the inmates is a heretical Inquisitor with a major score to settle. Her tale will be the backbone of the story, culminating in a climactic battle with Monn which can include any or none of the other inmates. Maxell’s own fate is flexible . He certainly deserves death and the Imperium may be all the better for it, but it’s up to the group.

Thoughts, feelings and opinions are all welcome. I think a group of around five people dedicated to seeing this through would be plenty. Looking to staert with it in the first month of 2012 as I’m sure we’ll all be busy getting back to work and with the chaos that can bring. I would ask that anyone who puts their name down be realistic with their commitment and upfront in the future if interest is lost so the workload can be picked up.

I would like to see Tau, Eldar (possibly dark eldar), human chaos, Tyranids, hell, even orks in this story but without over stretching. Full planning of story from start to finish, ideas for characters, motivations etc a must. I want this to succeed and I know it can be done.

I am interested in joining with the group of this story. In addition to what was mentioned on what races could be used in this story, I am uncertain if Necrons would be used however, as it is nigh impossibile to trap one, let alone imprison one. Nonetheless, there is still an array of races to help flourish the creative juices for our characters.

I've already got an idea of a character to craft for this story. I only hope that this group story will at least take off the ground.

I think it's conceivable that a Necron could be involved, but I'd veer away from writing anything POV for certain.

Nice to have you onboard Stuart, let's hope we get a few together and get this puppy started!

I haven't come up with a full character, but the idea I have in mind is that it will be a captured Ork Weirdboy.

Well I'd be interested. I'll try and think of a character, but I'm veering towards some kind of possessed Imperial preacher right now. If you'll have me, that is. I'll get to work on a bio. Ta.

Name: Ha'bazz

Species: Ork

Physical Appearance: Dark green skin that is atypical of his race, Ha'bazz now displays a brownish coating that now covers half his body. Scars and lacerations cover Ha'bazz's body and head, but emanating between these scars, particularly those on his skull, a strange yellow glow exudes. Blazing furiously from Ha'bazz's eyes, yellow fire burn from within Ha'bazz's sockets, to no obvious damage or harm to the bearer of such anomalies.

Subject History: Born on the world of Du'bark, Ha'buzz has become what is known, in the nearest possible translation of ork culture and language, a "Wierdboy", an ork that carries with him the connection and the ability to harness powers beyond the veil of the physical realm of real space.

Successfully capturing such a rare being, Ha'buzz has been imprisoned and subdugated to rigouris testing and torture, his potential as a weapon against the enemies of the Imperium being feverishly explored.

Cool stuff Stu, but I think for the moment we should focus on recruitment and then planning the story before getting into too much in the way of specifics. I'm trying to assess what we need to do to make sure this succeeds and starting by writing out a character each has proven problematic in the past. If you guys have any ideas for a particular character or element that would be useful, feel free to post them up but bear in mind that we won't necessarily each be having a character and that each one might not get much or any POV time. Ork POV is notoriously tricky and often a bugger to read, but a weird boy is a CRACKING idea for a story element. Much more options other than brutal fighting and much more thought to his actions. I like!

What I had envisaged for Ha'bazz in this tale is this: Ha'bazz won't be a leading character in the plot, but will be a character of significance to its development. Although an Ork, Ha'bazz won't follow the usual trend of an average Ork, rather, he'll play bit of a mavrik role. A weirdboy, he has a connection to the warp in a certain fashion, but his is a bit more deeper than an average weirdboy, partly because of his genetic makeup, and partly because of being manipulated by Inquistior Monn.

Ha'bazz won't simply just rampage through the place like a normal ork; with brute force, but with his powers. However, while he may wield such a colossal force, he doesn't have complete control, rather, it surges and spikes at random, and with dire consquences. With this trait, it would also help weaken the prison a bit more with this instability, lending the tale more areas to fleshout twists in the story, and escapepoints for characters to use. In effect, Ha'bazz is less of an atomic bomb to be used at will, but a walking natural disaster; in equal to that of a tornado or a tempest, with literally no means of stopping it, least not without putting one's self in the path of mortal danger.

I humbly present my idea for one of the prisoners. Any of this can change, its just a rough idea of what I thought the preacher might be like. Chop and change at will.

Lester Brass,
Arch-Preacher of the Church of the Emperor's Enlightenment, 8153 Aquilae

Brass is possessed by a fragment of the warp's collective psyche, a being infinitely weaker than the daemons the Inquisition normally encounters. The denizen – it has no name, at least not one human mouths can pronounce – is not even powerful enough to take complete control of Brass' body, with the pair battling for control. This can make the otherwise staunchly-Imperial Brass an erstwhile ally, as control can flip seamlessly between the two, often without anyone else realising; only Brass and the denizen know exactly for certain who is speaking at any given time.

Brass detests the creature inside of him, yet the denizen would seem to have developed an affection for him, aiding him in combat with its supernatural abilities and generally acting in Brass' interests. Whether the daemon is actually fond of Brass or is using him to further its own ends remains to be seen.

Brass possesses a gruff, stubborn personality, lacking and nuances of subtlety or tact. Due to his upbringing and role as preacher in his homeworld parish, he is unbreakable in his loyalty to the Emperor and the operatives of his will, making him easy to manipulate should any inquisitors, incarcerated or otherwise, wish to make use of him. The daemon is another kettle of fish entirely. Whilst it acts more submissive in its interactions with Brass, it will attempt to alter the situation to... well, whatever takes its fancy, through deceit and lies. In dealing with Brass, one must be careful that they are definitely talking to the Imperial priest and not the denizen of the warp.

Brass' goal? Survival. Exorcism. In that order. Brass may be loyal to the Throne, but he doesn't want to die, and will use whatever he can to survive, including the daemon. Brass can be convinced to aid the imprisoned inquisitor or the interrogator organising the jailbreak, but unless they force him otherwise, Brass will take any opportunity to escape the prison he can.

~~~
Ta-dah!
Nice work, Rusk!Definitely lots of potential in that idea. I'm going to hold out for a while in the hopes that a couple more people join up and work on the bare bones of the timeline in the meanwhile.
This looks to have some interesting possibilities. All the players must be interesting enough for Monn to have found some value in capturing them, but from the sounds of it there'll need to be a fair number of creatures who are outside the POV crew.
One of the best things there to add natural danger would be Tyranids - not a horde that rampages down corridors, but a selection of subjects which Monn was using to study the biology and the links of the hive mind, now prowling loose, Alien fashion.
Raz - If you'll have me, I'd love to take part in this. I should be able to commit a few hours every night over the next couple of weeks.
As the misty veil of Albion is cast aside, we turn our gaze to the war-torn island of Albany, where the Red King vies with his former master for the control of a realm in dire threat.
Adding you to our group Ghurlag, that would bring our total numbers to four, an ideal number for a group story.
We ourselves will or have done, conjour up characters upon which we'll be writing about ourselves, but as has been pointed out, this is a prison full of the universes worst of the worst, so conjouring up adversaries along the way isn't going to be a problem in order to fulfill enemies and obstacles to kill.
I hereby wish to grab a spare seat in this rather interesting story idea, if that's OK with folks. Can I assume from the way you wrote that intro piece that the heretical Inquisitor is, essentially, your character, Rahz?
If so, I think a Dark Eldar character would suit me just fine. Currently a toss up between a Mandrake with a personal grudge against his captor, or a Haemonculi who was technically almost working for him as a source of specialist knowledge - albiet an unwilling one.
Maugan, your slow descent into madness is starting to look more like a BASE jump...
Necrons aren't very alien in mindset anymore though, so a necorn character would work (a warrior wouldn't, but an Immortal might)
Welcome, Maugan Ra! Definitely pleased to have all of you interested in this!
I'm not going to lay claim to Inquisitor Monn or to Maxell particularly, though I'd like to have a reasonable degree of input into their characters. Very much in favour of Tyranids here in a small way, perhaps Genestealers? I must admit to being out of the loop with current Necron canon and won't have the Codex until possibly after BLL, pennies permitting, so I certainly won't be doing anything with them myself, at least not without taking major advice.
I think we've got enough people on board to have a bit of a mini brain storming session at this point too which is always good fun. We ideally need characters who are interesting / powerful / influential enough for Monn to have taken an interest in them but not so powerful that they either would be too dangerous to bring in or won't be in serious trouble when the doors are unlocked. I'd like to see unlikely co-operations if possible, maybe an Eldar as well as a Dark Eldar?
There is also the possibility of loyalists imprisoned here, people who have seen what the Inquisitor was up to and disagreed or were simply considered to be a liability at this point.
Any ideas regarding the story, events / scenes which might happen or anything else would be good. Bare bones will be planned but obviously can be changed as people wish.
Genuinely delighted at the response and to have each of you involved. Here's hoping we can succeed!
I'm actually interested in co-opting the character of Marneus Raxell (It might be a typo, but it seems an interesting detail to say that he conflated his name when he became an Inquisitor), Raz - I've been looking to write a similar villain character for some time. Of course I'd be happy to work with you closely on his development and plot particulars.
You mentioned a heretical Inquisitor as a prisoner in your first post as being the 'core' of the story - maybe we should look at her a bit more closely. Presumably she was an ally of Monn's. I don't know if you have something planned, but a backstory I can see easily is that, as a reasonably similar (radical/extreme) Inquisitor, she was working with him on a case where Monn's latent heresy slowly bubbled to the surface. Fearing discovery but unwilling to kill her (guilt? romantic interest?) Monn betrayed and imprisoned her.
As the misty veil of Albion is cast aside, we turn our gaze to the war-torn island of Albany, where the Red King vies with his former master for the control of a realm in dire threat.
I think with genestealers you'd have to be very careful, as they can be a bit overpowering (I'm going on the logic of Space Hulk and that terminators get munched by them, so what chance do some unarmed prisoners have?). I thought Ghurlag's suggestion of a mix of different breeds is more story-friendly. Plus it could have a scene of an inmate killing a termagaunt, getting a bit cocky and then coming across one of the really nasty gribblies :3
