Sure. I was thinking it being the first battle of the crusade, only the Caldona regiments would be involved, as they are the Marshal's own regiments and they got the choice transports on the way to the Hesperon subsector. Or something like that. Its going to be an all-out infantry slog through the agri domes and habs on the planet. No Tau involvement yet.

Options for enemies that I see are these: elite units of the Klesserine Hive Guard, Garrysta's Frateris Militia (rabble infantry more like), local PDF troops (a few thousand) and a couple tank companies over from Siparias.

Gotcha, i'm assuming they are heavily entrenched in the urban sectors. What should i expect in terms of orbital defenses and reble starcraft in the system? I was going to add something about the rebels hidding out in deep anti orbitl bunkers as to give reason for them surviving the navy blasting them from orbit.

I'm assuming the planet needs to be taken to support the crusade armies and fleets with food right?

Pretty much.

Just keep it light in terms of orbital defenses and all that stuff. For the fleets, keep it a simple engagement with only midcruisers and escorts involved. Marn's Reach isn't very well defended since its an agri world and the fleet detachment in system is meant for pirates and the like.

Otherwise go wild (not too much though).

Just run with it.

I am toying with the idea of making the Alnedos mission not just boring prose, but doing it how the artbooks and the IA books do it. For the final version that is.

Official documents that are snippets of briefings. Regimental deployment timetables. Perhaps some TO&Es? Character speeches. Campaign debriefs. The like.

Alright here is the Alnedos mission in detail. The only thing missing is the mission result and details of the actual assault as it happened. Comments welcome :)

____________________________________________________________________________________________

Assault on Alnedos

Pre-mission Brief

On 245825.M41 the Crusade command renewed its efforts against the rebels. An elite joint strike force of the Sable Swords, Sororitas and the three Numani Drop regiments was tasked with retaking the Alnedos system. A supplementary battlegroup under General Bacca of the Lunda regiments was also assembled. The first strike force was intended to punch through the system’s defenses and establish a foothold at the shipyard facilities. The second strike force would then form the hammer that would be dropped on Alnedos.

Capturing the Shipyards

Command of the first phase of the assault was given jointly to Captain Rossa, Canoness Preceptor Marin and High Colonel Octaivi. They would each be leading their forces and were empowered to make any decisions regarding the mission.

The discussions were quite lengthy and even heated. In the end however the three leaders had a plan that they could agree on and that Marshal Sergevi and Admiral Vitrus also wholly supported.

The first phase of the mission was to capture the shipyard facility, a giant spacedock that could comfortably accommodate dozens of cruisers and escorts at a time. It was officially known as Orion Base. However to get to Orion required passing through a gauntlet of naval space stations and other bases. Orion itself was protected by several Glorifier-class defense platforms that formed part of its defense network. And then there was the Zolme asteroidal mining colony which provided the shipyard with the needed raw materials. Any assault to take control of the shipyard required an invader to control Zolme as well.

Commodore Perchevi was assigned to the strike force, codenamed Spearthrust, as senior commander of all naval assets for the first phase. He would coordinate the conflict in space while the shipyard was under internal assault. Once the attack proper on the shipyard began, General Bacca’s forces would be given the order for transit.

Operation Spearthrust was broken down into several stages. Stage one involved an overwhelming lightning assault on Alnedos VII. The planet is home to an orbital monitoring station and serves as a minor transit point for all vessels entering and leaving the system. Mission commanders designated it as target Kappa-2. The Duron’s Fury would be leading the fleet into the system and would have the responsibility to neutralize the station.

Stage two was another lightning assault on the Alnedos Offworld Academy, a military outpost and training center for the system defense forces and the Alnedosi Rifles regiment. This was designated as Kappa-1. The Duron’s Fury was again designated to attend to destruction of the academy, its bombardment cannons being highly effective against ground targets.

Stage 3 called for an attack on Zolme itself, designated as Gamma-3 and would be neutralized and held by a strike force of the 135th Veranan Grenadiers under Major Tavers. They would be responsible for keeping communications open with the shipyard and system command on Alnedos itself. The asteroidal mining colony in the system was prioritized as a low threat, and only three companies of Veranans were assigned to the assault, assisted by the escort carrier Strongwind.

By this time Spearthrust risked detection from the advanced monitoring centers on Alnedos. The mission plan called for the fleet to now disregard any further threats at this time and push on for Orion Base. A small system battlegroup composed of system ships and armed tugs along with a half a dozen squadrons of Naval light cruisers and frigates protected Orion in addition to its three Glorifier defense platforms.

Commodore Perchevi, personally commanding the fleet, advocated a direct first attack that would allow the battlegroup to deploy troops to the shipyard, and then a holding action against the system defense fleet until Battlegroup Hammerstrike arrived. The Commodore also provided two Fury interceptor and two Starhawk bomber wings for the assault on the shipyard.

Captain Rossa and his marines were assigned the task of seizing the Orion Base command and control center. They were the best suited to such a fast assault. The Terminator squads of Sergeants Adelus and Vonners would be extremely useful here. The Sable Swords were to deploy aboard Thunderhawk Gunships and Caestus Assault Rams. They would form the first wave of the assault, in order to establish successful breaching points that could be utilized by the Sororitas and the Numani Drop Troopers.

Canoness Marin took upon herself to capture the shipyard’s enginarium and hold it until Orion Base was taken and the Sable Swords were in the command center. Her Battle-Sisters were to form the second wave, right behind the Sable Swords, deploying in specialized boarding torpedoes and Avalanche-class landers.

The three Numani Drop regiments under field command of High Colonel Octaivi would be the last wave. They would be deploying exclusively in Avalanche-class landers, the Imperial Navy’s workhorse for orbital assaults. The regiments’ flyers were being transported as well but would not take part in the assault. However, their entire complement of Sentinels and Tauros RAVs were assigned to the assault as well. The Numani were to seize control of all other essential facilities within Orion Base and take control of the shipyard’s vast hangar facilities. This would allow the Swords’ Thunderhawk gunships and the fleet’s Avalanche landers to dock with the shipyard and extract the assault force once the shipyard was secure.

Siege of Alnedos

Assaulting a highly developed industrial hive world like Alnedos was by no means an easy feat. The world is protected dozens of linked orbital defense stations. There are at least five orbital defense lasers on the planet as well. Then there is the Ramilies star fort Pride of Alnedos that forms the lynchpin of the planetary defenses.

Operation Hammerstrike called for some of the crusade fleet’s biggest naval assets. The entire Second Fleet was to be committed to the assault, as well as a battlegroup of the First Fleet, all under the command of Commodore Perchevi. With the remaining crusade fleet assets otherwise occupied in convoy duties and securing the recently conquered Siparias and Straffenberg systems, these are all that could be spared.

The bulk of the fighting force of the mission was made up of the entire Lunda regiments under General Bacca, two Gayara regiments under Lord Colonel Byran and 51st Veranans under Colonel Karbe. Additional support would be provided by the survivors of Spearthrust.

i would add a couple more infantry regiments to the assault on the planet itself. Other than that i spotted only a few tense problems in your outline. Everthing else seems good, great job man!

Inquisitorial History regards to the Klesser incident

Klesser Prime brought an entire sub-sector within the Imperium to attempted independence which resulted in the mobilisation for war which could have been easily avoided. Due to the problems within the Administratum even with managing the top secret files of the Emperor's holy Inquisition were several things missed.

The rebellion could have been avoided if a strategic resource was put into looking into the combined elements which resulted in rebellion. The first of these came from the first Tyrannic war.

According to source material from Interrogator Ajax, trusted interrogator of the Great Inquisitor Lord Kryptman. The Words of Siparius and Gojaha came dreadfully close to an attack from splinter fleets of the defeated Behemouth Hive Fleet. The entire sub-sector was forced to raise a huge armada in an attempt to defend themselves and be it by luck or more likely the will of the Immortal Emperor the sub sector was saved without the loss of a single world. However, this resulted in at least 4 systems being effected by Genestealer cults which resulted in civil unrest, and political scandal.

Thirty years after the first Tyrannic War the Administrator filed a report claiming that Straffenberg system was now exempt from Imperial Tithes for a space of a single century due to financial ruin. An investigation by the Administratum revealed that an economic depression had struck Straffenberg hard which had resulted in rising unemployment in most nabouring systems.

The Ecclesiarchy reported around this time to a decision to make radical changes within the sub-sector which had dangerous effects. The holy church could not maintain several temples and chapels due to the financial ruin of Straffenberg so several holy buildings were sold off and instead newer more centralised buildings were built. This gave the Ecclesiarchy priests in the local areas more autonomy but resulted in several systems having a less direct contact with the Imperial Creed.

The first signs of civil war came when the Order of the Vengeful Lady rebelled against the Holy Church. These Sisters of Battle strongly opposed the idea of a divided church and raised several people to their cause. With the growing unemployment of local systems this force of fanatics soon swelled and looked set to bring civil war within the sector. Was it not for the actions of the Adeptus Arbites arresting hundreds of key individuals then war would have soon followed. The remaining forces soon turned to banditry and infighting which only brought more arrests and stability. Those pirates that escaped judgement were said to have fled towards the Tau Empire.

For all intense and purposes it looked as if war had been adverted only for Seywol Darran and Sodain Garrysta to bring full on rebellion to the sub-sector. Inquisitor Gneaus a liaison between the Ordo Heriticus and Xenos looked at the evidence above and summarised these actions to be the route of the rebellion he came up with a theory on both individuals.

Sodain Garrysta
This individual seems to often yell and screams his beliefs of unity in the stars. He often reads texts said to be close in relation to the Emperors Unification Wars. His mentor a former Cardinal Wolsey had been believed to be a sympathiser of the former pirates objections to the reformation of church buildings. Stranger still is a belief from hundreds of Genestealer Cults that also talk of unity, it is believed that despite this heritical source some ideals were taken from the cultists. With the belief that the earliest pirates joined the Tau Empire and Sodain being perhaps sympathetic to them it could be believed that Water Caste diplomats may have found a way to corrupt a priest.

Seywol Darran
This Governor is a man who commanded a failing sub-sector where the leading world of production was in economic ruin and unemployment and crime were high. Hundreds of thousands of fanatical individuals were being shipped to penal colonies to serve their lives in poverty and shame. All the while there lacked no power to defend the sub-sector as local wars had brought any defence of the worlds to a non-existant stand still. Mounting with the pressure of fellow nobles pressuring the Governor to action it is believed that perhaps Seywol made a deal with the Tau which perhaps resulted in the systems starting to pull themselves from local troubles. This all eventually led to a Governor who believed that Xenos were the best defence that his people had.
