Book Challenge 2014

Postby Vivia » Sat Jan 04, 2014 12:53 am

It's here!

Adjust to your own preferences, in the end the real challenge is to read more.
This year's theme is diversity. Don't get stuck in a route.

The Challenge originally (and still has this year) a points based system where the aim is to score 100 points at least in the year. The rules and points are as follows.

What counts?
# Must be at least 50 pages long
# Fiction or non-fiction book
# Paper or e-book

But what about...
# Novels in collections? = counted as separate books
# Short story collections? = counted as a single book
# Poetry collections? = counted as a single book
# Individual plays? = counted as a single book
# Books started last year? = counted if finished this year
# Audiobooks? = counted, but make sure the hard copy of the book is over 50 pages
# Graphic novels and print comics? = counted only if over 100 pages
# Lord of the Rings? volumes count separately, but not books

How are the points awarded?
# 2 points for every book read this year that's over 50 pages (or comic that's over 100 pages)
# 3 points for every book read that's longer than 500 pages

Attention for foreign language speakers: this rule could be important, it's your choice in how to interpret:
>>># 3 points for every book read that's in a foreign language (4 points if it's over 500 pages, too)<<<

# 1 point for audiobooks, regardless of length
# 1 point for any book re-read within the 52 weeks of the year

[number.] [title] by [author], ([what it is*]), ([day/month]), [rating out of 5 in *'s], [number of points]

eg
1. A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, (F), (01/01), (*****), 2pts

The Key for labelling books
A - Autobiography
B - Biography
F - Fiction
GN - Graphic Novel
M - Memoir
NF - Non Fiction
P - Poetry
RB - Rule Book
SS - Short Story Collection
&c. (You can add your own)

Debating whether or not to actually do this, since I tend to try for the first few months of these and then under-report/skip everything else that occurs later in the year.

So... yes, I suppose that I will be doing this. I'll see what I can do.

1. Mockingbirds by Chuck Wendig, (F), (01/03), (***), 2pts
2. The Cormorant by Chuck Wendig, (F), (01/03), (****), 2pts
3. Locke and Key, Volume 1: Welcome To Lovecraft by Joe Hill, (GN), (01/04), (*****), 2pts
4. Throne of the Crescent Moon by Saladin Ahmed, (F), (01/05), (***), 2pts
5. Tome of the Undergates by Sam Sykes, (F), (01/14), (****), 2pts
6. The Unremembered Empire by Dan Abnett, (F), (01/21, (****), 2pts
7. The Judging Eye by R. Scott Bakker, (F), (01/22), (****), 2pts
8. Bloodsucking Fiends by Christopher Moore, (F), (01/23), (***), 2pts

16 points

LOL I just found out I fail at reading rules, which is pretty pathetic for a lawyer. :P So, all the thick comic books count as two points which means that last year, I aced 200 pts, definitely. *adjusts list for this year*

"This year's theme is diversity" she says...
"Don't get stuck in a rut" she says...
And what do I decide to do right at the start of the year? Re-read ALL of Terry Pratchett's Discworld books - with out exception and in order.
I'm such a rebel...

1). "The Colour Of Magic" by Terry Pratchett, (F), Jan, (***), 2pts - RR -
