Book Challenge 2013

Postby Vivia » Sat Jan 05, 2013 5:39 pm

Taken from last years challenge by Bane of Kings.
I think it was a great, positive idea, and also a good way to keep track what kind of books we read, this can lead to more diverse reading material.
Adjust to your own preferences, in the end the real challenge is to read more.
This year's theme is to spend less time online and read books instead. It can be done! :)

The Challenge originally (and still has this year) a points based system where the aim is to score 100 points at least in the year. The rules and points are as follows.

What counts?
# Must be at least 50 pages long
# Fiction or non-fiction book
# Paper or e-book

But what about...
# Novels in collections? = counted as separate books
# Short story collections? = counted as a single book
# Poetry collections? = counted as a single book
# Individual plays? = counted as a single book
# Books started last year? = counted if finished this year
# Audiobooks? = counted, but make sure the hard copy of the book is over 50 pages
# Graphic novels and print comics? = counted only if over 100 pages
# Lord of the Rings? volumes count separately, but not books

How are the points awarded?
# 2 points for every book read this year that's over 50 pages (or comic that's over 100 pages)
# 3 points for every book read that's longer than 500 pages

Attention for foreign language speakers: this rule could be important, it's your choice in how to interpret:
>>># 3 points for every book read that's in a foreign language (4 points if it's over 500 pages, too)<<<

# 1 point for audiobooks, regardless of length
# 1 point for any book re-read within the 52 weeks of the year

[number.] [title] by [author], ([what it is*]), ([day/month]), [rating out of 5 in *'s], [number of points]

eg
1. A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, (F), (01/01), (*****), 2pts

The Key for labelling books
A - Autobiography
B - Biography
F - Fiction
GN - Graphic Novel
M - Memoir
NF - Non Fiction
P - Poetry
RB - Rule Book
SS - Short Story Collection
&c. (You can add your own)
There is nothing gay about the Princeton fight song. "Oh, the men of Princeton are charging up the rear, holding all the balls..." Okay, I hear it now. – Jack, episode Queen of Jordan

Re: Book Challenge 2013

Postby Vivia » Wed Jan 09, 2013 12:55 am

Just took a closer look at the rules, only took a year or so. Any foreign language book counts as 3 points. English is a foreign language for me, but the challenge is English speaking, that would mean Swedish is the foreign language? I'm a little confused. :/
Edit: I made up my mind.

Ideas for this years challenge: continue with older books, mysteries and detective stories. Sci-fi and crafts book are another goal. More variety in general and to make an effort to change genre every other book or so.

1. Hammer and Bolter 15, (SS), (08/01), (**), 3 pts (don't know if this counts)
2. Sputnik Älskling by Haruki Murakami, F, 18/01, **, 2 pts (so-so, an empty space story, the ending, hmm)
3. Skönt Stickat by Eva Wincent and Paula Hammarskog, NF, 30/1, ***, 2 pts (excellent knitting book with Swedish design, beautiful layout and clear descriptions)
4. Knit Red: Stitching For Women's Heart Health by Laura Zander , NF, 17/2, ***, 3 pts (beautiful knitting book, elegant designs all knitted in red yarn, with only a few real dowdy garments, background and advice to live a healthy life without being preachy)
5. Kamratfesten (Gaudy night) by Dorothy Sayers, F, 1/3, ***, 2 pts (misleading title, the novel doesn't contain any gaudy night, the word gaudy might mean something else)
6. Have His Carcase by Dorothy Sayers, F, 3/3, **, 3 pts (not a favourite, a little long-winded in large)
7. Stil Med Thulin by Camilla Thulin, NF, 5/3, ***, 2 pts (charming book about style and garment care)
8. Lord Peters Största Fall (Whose Body) by Dorothy L.Sayers, F, 6/3, ***, 2 pts
9. Five Red Herrings by Dorothy L.Sayers, F, 16/3, *, 3 pts (yes, only one star, the ending was a major disappointment, worthy of Agatha Christie's bull****)
10. The Unpleasantness At The Bellona Club by Sayers, F, 25/3, ***, 3 pts (much better than the previous novel)
11. Lord Peters Otroliga Enlevering by Sayers, SS, 11/4, ***, 2 pts (two novellas, nice little collection)
12. Custom Knits by Wendy Bernat, NF, 27/6, ****, 3 pts (favourite knitting book so far)
13. Historiens Största Mordgåtor by various, NF, 19/10, ***, 2 pts
14. Knitting Lingerie Style by Joan McGowan-Michael, NF, 3 pts
15. Somerset the Belgrade Cat's Mysteries by Mike Jelley, SS, 6/11, ***, less than 50 pages, 1 pts

30 pts

Ewww! Foreign! :o

(In other news, I'd go with 'reading in English' being your foreign language. Some might call it an unfair advantage, other [more sensible] people would call it a massive benefit of the non-English-speaking-as-a-first-language world. Yes, all your Scandinavian Utopia shenanigans have been for this: slightly easier racking up of points in the book challenge!)

Foreign Language just means something that isn't your first language.

I can say that as this whole mess started on another site when I brought it over. I took a break from Nefetra to read two graphic novels. I'll add them after I make dinner.

Yes, I know, it's fine. It was just me for not paying attention to the rules sooner.

Not to nitpick, Liliedhe, but how are you managing to read books two days into the future? Did you mean January the 3rd or something? If it's meant to be January 2013, I think you can drop the '2013' bit as assumed :).

Vintage books? Does 'Bergdoktor' mean mountain doctor? :)

Forgetting to update is one of the pitfalls with the challenge, I don't know how I kept updating. For example I forgot to add Gone With The Wind and I suspect there is more.

She means 1/13, January 2013, that's how we write dates in Sweden as well, D/M/Y.

We do as well, but I was considering that it might be american dating practice (M/D/Y), like Mossy does it, given the constant nature of the Y value.

Aha, I thought you did the same in the UK as in the US, I find it really hard to read. I always write the D/M for my books, since the challenge is for a specific year it seems unnecessary to write the year (it's also very helpful for me to see how fast I read in one month).

For the record, I agree that the American date method makes very little sense. I chose to use the "Jan 10" methodology rather than "1/10" to avoid some confusion of flipped dates, relative to you lot. Just a little FYI.

I meant January 2013, without giving a day (since I forget them anyway). Changed it to just say January, so nobody is confused.

Yes, it does. ^^ No, they aren't vintage, they are new. Romances, each 65 pages long. It's a series, you get a new one every week.
