Hartz laughed to himself, the noise resounding in the broken guard house. The enemy had thought that the people of Frontin would crumble beneath their siege, but they had been wrong.

He took a bite of the cold meat patty, the juices spilling down his chin as he ate. All had seemed lost as the food supplies ran out, but luckily the Governor had found a new resource, a meat source which he claimed was virtually limitless in quantity.

Hartz wiped his stubble-coated face. It tasted like pork he thought. But where had the Governor found pigs during a siege?

Chilling man, but in a good way.

Siege

We’re hemmed in. Cut off from our supply train, from the fuel and the food and the ammunition. The storm is fekking up the vox, we can’t reach our Colonel, our regiment, the rest of our Olympian brothers. Just a lone company in shallow trenches, open to the cold and the wind and death.

The marshal’s voice rang through once, crackling through the speakers, over the roaring and howling from outside.

Hold your position lad, he had said, hold. We are coming.

Food’s gone, fuel too. The ammunition’s held but it’s the men that are draining away.

They die of cold, of hunger. Some off themselves. No desertions but then where can they run?

How can we fight an enemy we can’t see? How can we survive? Every day the snow drifts mount higher.

How can you fight winter?

Thanks.

Enjoyed your effort, you managed to convey the hopelessness of the troops in the limited words available, quite an achievement. When so much of the GW universe is big bangs and explosions, it is often the understated horror which is most effective. Nicely done.

Thanks! I hate most of the "bolter porn" that BL comes out with, stories are about the people, not the fighting.

“It only takes one man to break this siege. Millions of worlds, billions of lives. All wasted if that one man gets through.

Do not misunderstand me. A successful siege has untold numbers get through the lines. There will never be a siege so impenetrable that none get through.

What matters is that that one man never gets through. All the others? They get met by those who know defense, by those who see the holes, by those who bar the way.

You are Imperial Fists. You see the holes. You bar the way.

That one man must not pass!”
