Part 7-4: The Tale of Ngaru

.//
The Vlka Fenryka, later called the Space Wolves in common parlance during the age of the Imperium Secundus, were fell beasts. More beastial and ferocious than their equivalent Astartes, they were the cunning fortress breakers. And later on, they were the specialists who were Astartes hunters. During the Great Crusade, the Fenryka were deployed as the most ruthless and brutal of the Astartes Legion.

Where the World Eaters were berserk machines of destruction that acted like sharks in a feeding frenzy, and the Blood Angels superb assault specialists that moved like a well-oiled machine intent on closing upon their enemies, the Fenryka were like their namesake. Cunning, vicious, ruthless, brutal and most of all – relentless.

Accompanied by 6 Companies of the Legio Custodes, the Fenryka deployed into the sector, while the Death Guard and Iron Warriors formed a cordon around the surrounding worlds, cutting off their routes of escape. The Ultramarines Legion was sent to inspect and vet the remaining companies who had obeyed orders to return to their garrison. Amongst the Legions Astartes, the Nightmaw Brethren maintained an exceptionally large scout cadre, often deployed alongside the Geno Soldiers and Imperial Army as reconnaissance specialists and commandos. They had to be vetted for possible signs of rebellion.

And Ngaru saw this with his prescience, as his plan flowed along the path he had set, step by bloody step. The Chaos Gods howled at the abomination. Even where their names were chanted in prayer, they had a pittance of souls, nothing but a few ergs of negative emotion and despair, the souls sucked into an artefact that denied them their due.

Steps had already begun to entrap Horus but this Primarch had been unaccounted for. Slaanesh hissed in the Warp, puzzled and annoyed at the enigma this presented, while Khorne rages, struggling with Nurgle as their daemons flowed and melted together in cacophonous combat. Tzeentch simply smiled enigmatically, an eye cast upon the twisting, mutating forms of the future. Plans within plans within plans. Contingencies were in place for Rogal Dorn, the Imperial Praetorian, the next key person and another of the Emperor's blind spots.

<<<>>>
All the while, Ngaru heard the whispers in the Immaterium. And all the while, he smiled. Over the course of the Great Crusade, Ngaru had changed in personality. While still possessed of an innate nobility and will, as all Primarchs did, he had become increasingly ruthless and amoral. Scheming, Machiavellian and intricate in his planning, he lacked the vindictiveness of Perturabo and the ego of his brothers, tending to look for the positive effects and seeking to learn from defeats and setbacks. In every plan he conceived, even a setback resulted in a beneficial outcome for him and his Legion.

Never truly sadistic or cruel without reason, his approach was similar to Guilliman. He drew the line at the senseless mass murder of populations or genocide, unless the situation warranted it or there was a greater beneficial effects resulting from it. His exposure to Vulkan had influence him, his interactions with Alpharius Omegon shaping him. His massacres were calculated to provoke a specific response. And in this, he succeeded spectacularly, as the Fenryka relentlessly pursued his renegades on a fruitless chase.

In the course of their hunting, he always planned 10 steps ahead. Every single move had a single intent – to inflame and enrage Leman Russ and his Fenryka beyond all reason and mercy. In the course of Leman Russ's pursuit, an independent review of the files by the Inquisition during the reign of Roboute Guillimann suggested that their destruction of several Ork-held worlds and what were later found to be worlds with Dolmen Gates and Webway Gates freed the area of Eldar, Necron and Ork influence for several millennia afterwards, during and even after the Imperium Secundus, through the 2nd Age of Strife. These areas were sectors adjacent to what is now Imperial Armageddon and its surrounding sectors.

The pursuit continued for close to a decade, Leman Russ never truly able to capture his renegade brother. In absolute wrath, Leman Russ despoiled several star systems, creating a firebreaks as he seeded several systems with remote outposts, Navigator beacons and colonies behind him. Each a garrison that would grow to become civilised worlds. The slaughter stopped, even as the Nightmaw renegades led the Fenryka in a chase away from populated space and into the darkness of the Eastern Fringe.

And in the void behind the Fenryka, there followed small elements of Astartes. Clad in ceramite of blue, with green trimmings, they bore the sign of a hydra as their heraldry. In the dark and lonely places of the galaxy, they gathered, as they prepared for the coming of the storm. Concealed caches of weapons were set up, webway gates dug up and concealed in bunkers deep within the bedrock of geologically stable areas, designed to resist the millennia of time.

And so the plan began to enter the endgame. The Fenryka, for all their culpability, did learn. And they were relentless. Propelled by anger and the news of the impending rebellion of another Primarch at the other end of the Sector, Leman Russ howled in fury as he deployed his Great Companies to aid the Word Bearers in crushing the rebellion. Meanwhile, he would deal with Ngaru personally.

Over a decade of relentless pursuit, his sons whittled away, Ngaru was now left with no more than a single battle barge, his others having been reclaimed by Fenryka boarding parties. In determined close combat, the Wolves of Russ had gutted the Nightmaw, ripping their very hearts out in a domain of combat where only the Blood Angels and World Eaters could truly contest against the Fenryka.

And every moment of their deaths Ngaru felt, throught the soul-binding that bound his Astartes to him, their souls adding to the bonfire of his own as they expired and joined him. The Oblivion Stone he set apart, in a necklace of steel chains around his neck, throbbing with immaterial power worthy of a god. Tears of pain and remorse ran down his eyes, regret clawing at hi

Like the wolves of Fenris or the ancient wolves of Terra, persistence predators of untold endurance who ran down their prey to exhaustion, just like humans. Combined with the tactics of ambush, Russ finally brought Ngaru to heel on a desolate and arid world that had seen better eons, orbiting a red sun that was entering the final phase of its life as a red supergiant, hydrogen beginning to fuse into helium and helium into successively heavier elements, a slow march to a stellar death, dragged out over millennia and then eons.

[Record Stamp: Author change]
{I tell the tales now in my own words. I recorded my memories into this wraithstone of human origin, imprinting my personality and knowledge into it. I leave this as my legacy. History will judge me as it sees fit. If anyone survives after all this time. Now I tell you the tale of my demise. Of the end of my path as a Primarch...and the beginnings of something new. I walk in the dark places, where no shadows I cast. And know this....it has been the hardest,most bitter path. Only Alpharius could ever understand. Only now do I know the cursed knowledge of the Night Haunter and why he did what he did. He was kindred, though I never knew it until my end....everything I did...everything Alpharius did...we did it for Humanity. We did it for our Father. We did it for the Emperor. Emperor forgive me and protect me for all my sins. Even after everything...all I wanted was to save humanity....- attributed to Ngaru Astaros, Primarch of the Nightmaw Brethren Astartes Legion}

I entered the Balcora system. The Balcora Gate was here. I felt the power of my soul within me. My sons knew the sacrifice had to be made. It was justified, each and every single one. The Oblivion Stone throbbed within my hand. Power incarnate....the temptation is there. I do not deny it. My soul flares with power, similar to the way that the Exarchs and Phoenix Lords operate. A thousandfold souls of my sons, added to my own power. A hundred Navigators, merged with me. Their voices fill my mind, receding into it. I feel the symphony within – the understanding of just how it breaks me.

Even now, I still cannot face Russ. Leman Russ, the Executioner and Silencer of the Emperor. The Imperial Executioner who does the work no other would do. His Wyrd, self-imposed yet so typical of him. Noble in his intent, he does what few other brothers would do. Ruthless, savage and brutal. Little does he realise how that will play against him and Magnus when Horus plays his hand and betrays our sire. This is the only path before me.

We entered the system, followed by an entire fleet of ships. It was not a fight so much as butchery. The decks burned, venting plasma into space, while raw immaterium bled from the warp core, leaving a contrail behind us that any being could have followed from the other side of the galaxy. Atmosphere vented as I refused to fire upon them all. The Fenryka need to be viewed as heroes. The Fenryka need for us to be purged, therefore we cannot fire back.

They pursued us. Lance shot and nova cannon streaked after us, followed by countless torpedoes. A missile massacre that tore and ripped away at the hull. We entered the atmosphere, the air screaming away as plasma at away at our ship from within, superheated air from without. The smell of ozone permeates the ship. Servitors burn and malfunction. We are a ship of the walking dead, consigned to the flames to be rendered unto ash.

As servitors lurched and burned, as the human crew died in their thousands and added their own essence to the light of my soul, my astral body growing in its luminosity within the immaterium, I took a remaining Thunderhawk. I piloted it through the flames, keeping the husk of my ship between me and the Wolves. All the Astartes who had followed me are dead now, living on within me.

We will continue the hunt. We know the necessity of what we do. We are many. We are Legion and we will not be denied. We are the voice of the chorus, individuals amongst the collective. Loyal to the Emperor, Ngaru Astaros dominant within. We are each a person, our soul a small dream of aware existence. A bonfire of dreams lies within the soul of the oracle. And from this bonfire do we draw strength. We are Legion.

I land the gunship in the centre of ravine. They shall track me. I enter the underground complexes here. Khanda and his Machina allies stripped it of the Necron technologies within long ago. An archive of the Eldar and the Krork, it contained knowledge of the Old Ones as well as the Necrons and C'tan. An archive maintained by a Cryptek dedicated to knowledge above all. Makultra – the creator of the Nagashyr. Dabaku took it and now....we saw it. A mad god, fragmented and alone. Machine God and Omnissiah, First and Eldest, fatherless. Arisen in the virtual information oceans of the networks of Old Earth.

My tale draws to its conclusion...

The desolate rock of Balcora IV is a place of ancient battles and bloodshed. Here lies a splinter-shard of a C'tan. Here lies a Dolmen Gate, ready and waiting to bear me to my fate. It is as I foresaw. The Alpha Legion will do as they require. The Warp still echoes of the butchery here. Ancient Krork and Eldar and Hrud and Old Ones contested the might of the Nightbringer here. A melee a trois of epic proportions, fought when the galaxy was young and humanity no more than small mammals amongst the dinosauria of Earth.

The Nightbringer fought the Outsider here, delaying its advance and inadvertently saving the rest of the galaxy from its madness and predation. Despite the power differential, here was where the mad beast was stopped by a vicious monster. It was here that the Void Dragon, mightest of the C'tan, brought the insane Outsider to heel and entrapped him. Far too powerful and vicious to kill, it was near-equal in its madness to the Dragon. It was bound and sealed, trapped away until such a time the collective consciousness within posed n

The seed needs to be planted in this day and age. Leman Russ needs to question himself. His commanders and Wolf Priests and Wolf Guard must question why I refused to fire upon them. Why so few have died, where those few Fenryka who did so died only because my sons defended themselves or did so by accident. One day, that seed will result in a Fenryka Chapter Master, the Great Wolf Logan Grimnar, questioning himself. By our sacrifice, mercy and the will to question themselves is planted within the Fenryka – so that Armageddon may be saved.

Everything I do is for the future. Do I have delusions of being a messiah? A divine saviour? Maybe. I question myself constantly but am left with no question. This is the only path. I have foreseen the vast scope of the future until the 56th and 57th Millennium. I cannot see beyond that, for the future becomes clouded and murky. Great conflicts and mighty powers struggle then. Vulkan and Armageddon were the most stable materium motes I could fix my vision upon. Even Fulgrim may yet be redeemed and rescued....

Others may look for a good man. Maybe I am what the psyker-sage Diogenes sought for, separated from him in history and space. An honest man willing to die for all the wrong reasons. How terribly...funny. Ironic. Iacob the Last Good Man. Ngaru Astaros the Fallen, Deluded Messiah. The Hidden Primarchs, Khanda-Parashur and Ngaru Astaros, defiers of the Imperial Truth who came back at lost. Never lost. We only were the prodigals amongst his sons. The First Prodigals. The others too will be lost and scattered, on their own quests.

What Dorn will experience...Dorn's Darkness. The despair of a Primarch as he stands over the ruined husk of our Sire. I have seen it. I have seen futility and despair and horror and WAR WAR WAR! I have seen the End Times and the horrors of the mirror devil's unleashed. I have witnessed the perverted machinations of the Greater Good of the race yet to arise. Naive fools! The universe doesn't care! Its too vast to care. Gods play dice and loaded are they in their tossing and turning.

“Renegade!” the voice boomed, authoritative and fierce, edged with raw aggression and lethality in every syllable and tone. A barbarian lord clad in the skin of an apex predator, the Great Wolf strode forth into the chamber, his prey finally cornered after all these years.

“Leman” Ngaru stated. On a stair of carved rock leading to a portal of living stone that pulsed with wrongness, it lay dormant and waiting. Ngaru Astaros was seated in a lotus position, ebon flames shrouding him while eyes of molten amber stared out from his countenance. His immaterial sould glowed like a nova, a storm of souls thousands strong part of the gestalt. Ebon plasma flowed up and around him, shimmering and dark. Jet-black armour bereft of heraldry glowed with wards. It was a jet black, shaded the black of the stellar void. So deep that a mortal eye slid off it and shimmered when one looked directly upon it.

The two brothers faced off, the Wolf Guard training their bolters upon the Primarch, while the Wolf King faced Ngaru, axe in one hand and blade in the other. Ngaru rose to face him, a power spear clasped in one hand, fell light shining from his eyes. Drawing upon the Warp, Leman channelled even greater power into his body, growing in stature and physical power as he rose to dominate the room, a veritable juggernaut of ceramite, geneboosted muscle and bone and raw aggression. Ngaru had foreseen this. He could kill anyone in this room. With his prescience he could plan and counter the Wolf King, evade him and ultimately defeat him, at the cost of his own life. That was the only way this could end. But he did not intend to kill his brother...

“Surrender. Should you choose to test my resolve in this matter, you will be facing a finality beyond your comprehension, and you will not be counting days, or months, or years, but millenia in a place with no doors” stated Russ, as he began to test the Primarch, noting his stance and attitude.

“Our sire ordered my return alive?” Ngaru asked, already specific as he twirled the spear in his hand, the blade vibrating as it heated up and the power fields activated, distorting and phasing reality, altering physical constants around it like all power weapons did, phase-space energies slipping through from the shallowest border between Materium and Immaterium.

“Alive or in pieces. Either is acceptable, as long as your tongue and brain are intact. And there are devices capable of keeping you alive even as you scream, your body vivisected and torn apart at the molecular level, that are in my possession. You do not wish to test me brother.”

A pregnant silence filled the void between as all movement stilled. Fractionally, millimeter by millimeter, Ngaru lowered his body to the ground, as if submitting. The Wolf King tensed, warily eyeing his younger brother. The moment stretched out into minutes, before the guard of Russ dropped fractionally. In an instant Ngaru had leapt upon him, servomotors, sinew and muscle propelling him into the Wolf King.

The battle was legend, as expected of two Primarchs contesting each other. The Wolf Guard disengaged, withdrawing as their Primarch roared for them to distance themselves, lest they be caught on the periphery. Through cavernous hallways and dark grottoes the two battled. Pillars of stone were cast at each other, reinforced walls that had withstood the ravages of time crumbling before their collisions.

Kraken blade alight with the raw energy of the Warp, purified and filled with the killing intent of his being, Leman Russ raged and throttled Ngaru. In retaliation, ceramite-clad power gloves were cupped and slammed upon his ears. Blows that would have torn through the armour of a Land Raider and ripped the heart of a Baneblade were exchanged, as spear met blade and axe. Armour dented and crumpled, only to be renewed by self-repair systems and nanomachinery. The artifice of Vulkan, refined by Ferrus Manus and enhanced by the technological wizardry of Khanda, Ngaru combined technological prowess and prescience in a dazzling dance as he battled the Wolf King.

Ngaru fought defensively, drawing his brother into an assault that refused to let up. Axe chipped away, hewing the air. Ngaru dodged and evaded, trickery and misdirection part of it as he cast illusions and images before the Wolf King. As they drew closer, he drew the Wolf King to shatter ever more of the pillars that held up the chamber, Leman Russ noting it and obliging by casting the great pillars of granite at his brother.

But is was a psychological battle as well, the renegade casting questions upon his brother primarch, planting the seeds of doubt.

“You have no answer to any of my questions! To any of fathers questions!”

Russ replied with stoic silence, before a terse reply. “I am a soldier! A loyal, true son of the Emperor. And you are nothing more than a traitorous cur, begotten and made, one not in being with our father. You rejected him. And so I sentence you and judge you! You are as bad as Magnus. As Khanda!”

No. We are prophets. You say you are a soldier? How are you willing to go? How much are you prepared to risk? How many people are you prepared to sacrifice for victory? Are you willing to die friendless, alone, deserted by everyone? Because that's what may be required of you in the war that is to come! That is what we do even NOW! Ngaru Astaros, Alone yet within we ARE LEGION!

Ngaru leapt and stabbed his spear forward, impaling Russ upon it. Russ simply smiled and spat blood upon the visor of his brother, grabbing his spear and wrenching it forward in a spray of blood and gore. He headbutted Ngaru and sent him stumbling, as the power field of the spear and the momentum forced it into and through the Wolf King. Grabbing the spear, he cast it at Ngaru who had retreated. The spear was hurled at speeds that broke the sound barrier, its aim true. Ngaru narrowly avoided it, catching it in midflight and bleeding away its momentum in an intricate series of movements designed to intimidate.

The Wolf King laughed at the audacity of his brother and continued the chase, his reply echoing through the caverns.

“You are a renegade cur. A wretch with delusions of being a messiah. I name you Maleficarum, for I am the cleansing light of the Emperor. I am the Wolf that devours the stars themselves and tames the night. I am that which the Outer Darkness fears. Do you not think others know of the Primordial Annihilator? Do you not think that I have been tempted by the voices of the Darkness in the Warp? Do you not think that Khorne whispers to me? Of an eternity of blood and slaughter, skulls laid upon his throne? Nay. I rejected him. For I build skulls to be laid as sacrifices to THE EMPEROR! And your skull shall I add to it!”

As the battle continued, stretching from hours into days, even into weeks, the two playing what eventually boiled down to a game of tag, Russ was torn between amusement and rage, laughing at the audacity and cunning of his brother. Letting his ebon flames retreat to within himself, Ngaru activated the holofields of his armour, technology stolen from the Harlequins of the Webway. His image shattered into a cloud of crystal shards that danced and moved, swirling around him in a disorienting display of light and shadow. His image exploding in a flash of light, he wrestled and tore at the Wolf King, Russ casting aside his blades as he finally tired.

In the silence, Russ closed his eyes before opening them, eldritch fires bursting with vigour within. In the deepest recesses of the ancient complex, he brought the renegade primarch to heel. Ngaru leapt from the shadows, before a vast immensity that blindsided his prescience enveloped him. Weapons cast aside, it came down to foot and fist, leg and arm, knees and elbows.

Let it be said this – Sanguinius was a grand master in the art of unarmed combat. In private sparring matches the Angel, the Lion and the Wolf had fought and sparred, Horus and the Night Haunter coming in a close second to the trio. Each had their styles and strength. Where the Lion and Fulgrim were the finest duelists amongst them, each able to fight the other only to a draw, in raw combat only Sanguinius and Leman Russ came to match the other in raw fury. Formidable as each Primarch was, Russ and Sanguinius were above all the grand masters in unarmed combat amongst the brothers.

The combat was fast-paced and furious, Ngaru weakening with every blow that smote him, as the Wolf King lifted him up and cast him upon the rock of the cavern. Rising, blood dribbling from the ruined mass of his face, he took upon the brutality of the Wolf King and endured. But the two were coming close to the end of their reserves of power. As powerful as they were, they had suckled upon the power of the Warp to sustain them, and months had elapsed, even as clarion call of war resounded through the galaxy. The perfection of their genetic forms and their psychic might had limits. In prolonged combat over the span of months? Even Primarchs had to rest.

“Why do you endure? Tell me WHY!” roared Russ into the face of Ngaru. Even as Ngaru rose, Russ sent a powerful knee strike into his face, followed by a blow upon his back that broke his back and pummelled him into the ground. Even as he fell, Ngaru lashed out with his knee, shattering the knee of the Wolf King and the lay sprawled, even as their bodies healed and regenerated.

A dark silence fell before Ngaru chuckled, rising to peals of hysterical laughter that echoed in the depths.

“I have created a Hell where I am the chief damned soul Leman. The people that follow me? The ones I call friend? Are you willing to sacrifice them? What about family? What about our father, Kadmon? What about truth? What about duty? What about blood? What about justice? What about compassion? What about faith? What about sin? What about Hell? What about death? What about ETERNITY? I HAVE CONSIGNED ALL OF THOSE I KNOW TO THIS FATE! I HAVE SACRIFICED LOVE AND PAIN AND AGONY ON THIS PATH! YOU. KNOW.NOTHING!

In a moment of poignant silence, the Wolf King stopped to consider everything. He had never smelt Maleficarum upon his brother, despite the years of battling. He had not smelt the taint of lies and deceit upon him. Truth. He stank of truth. Not nearly as much as dour Dorn, but the scent remained. And slowly, he saw a way. Perhaps to understand. Perhaps to get under his guard. But for a minute, an odd brotherly concern arose, and he allowed it free reign. For a moment.

“What cause do you fight for brother? Why do you fight?” queried the Wolf King, as sinew and hardened bone knit together. Biological ceramics knotting and twisting at a pace no human could ever hope to sustain.

He was answered with a silence of pondering, before Ngaru, his back healing rapidly, rose slightly from the crater he lay in. Rich blood flowed from a bitten tongue and shattered nose, gobbets of gore ejected from his mouth, the lining of his airway regenerating.

“I fight...for life and humanity. One life. A human life. A billion. Its all the same. I fight for the chance for it to be free and grow.”

“I do not understand.”

“I don't need you to understand. Answer me brother – why do you fight?”

Russ grunted. “You make a sacrifice willingly. No fame. No armies or banners or cities to celebrate your name. You will die, alone, unremarked upon and forgotten. All for this cause. Why? As you sacrificed so many for your cause. As I fought and killed some of the other Nightmaw who fled away into the Eastern Fringe with Mjalnar, that which I have yet to use upon you...I am the Executioner. Father made us and our Legions for a purpose. A Wyrd lay upon us. I fulfil that, for I find it meaningful. On that path, I have mastery and purpose. I have freedom, knowing my place.”

“Your dharma. I already see it. Nirvana. Personal liberation. Is that not what so many of us seek? Dharma. The natural order. The Buddhists of Old Earth knew of it. The Natural Law. The nature of an object. That which upholds the regulatory order of the universe. It is the nature of our soul to be free, adrift and reincarnating within the Warp, growing to a state where it can transcend through the Well of Eternity. Humans – beings of duality. Our body seeks self-preservation and pleasures of the senses. Moksha is the end-state of us material beings.”

Fully healed, the brothers rose, battered, bruised and fatigued. Ngaru staggered forward, at the limits of his endurance. Russ advanced forward, drawing the frostblade Mjalnar. He raised it into guard, calm and tranquil as he transcended wrath and rage – a calm, meditative fury he reserved only for the greatest of foes or for the execution of worthy foes.

“Ultimate Reality. The Absolute. I saw it brother...the Well of Eternity. Please...I have trod the path of prophecy so long. I...need to walk it further. You may deliver your justice to me. Please brother...let me....”

In a moment upon which prophecy teetered, the Wolf King raised his guard and pointed Mjalnar at Ngaru, even as his brother reach out for him, hands trembling in anticipation. Ngaru saw the path of prophecy crumble. A dead Primarch, himself, cast down by Russ. A living Primarch, immobile on a stone throne on a world distant and far, yet oh so near, trophy-prize of a mirror-devil lord. And so he entered into the kythe, the psychic communion of a kind more profound than that of telepathy. Kything was a wordless, mind-to-mind communication in which one person, in essence, almost became another, seeing through their eyes and feeling through their senses. In such a frame of mind, the two people intuitively knew the meaning of what the other was telling them, disregarding such things as words or pictures. A communion that transcended spacetime itself, as he revealed to the Russ his ultimate fate.

A single fingertip touched the Wolf King and in an instant, the Wolf King roared. It was a roar that split rock and wrenched a primal fear from the deepest part of the human genetic code. It was the roar of a predator. The roar of an agonised being whose suffering knew no bounds as knowledge of the universe flooded in, fragmented and discarded. In empathic pain, Ngaru fell to his knees, as the unexpected rage overcame him, the curse of the Wulfen surging through him. Past, present and future flipped and see-sawed, tossing them like a boat in a storm, before settling to a slow ebb.

And then the Wolf King gazed upon his brother, as centuries of fatalistic acceptance and resignation came down. He saw fragments of himself in Commoragh. A waking nightmare. The Divided Agonies. No. Falsehood. Lies. It had to be. Fragmented and splintered shards of memory and motes of instinct and intuition guiding him.

Ngaru spoke then, tears of blood seeping from his eyes.

Father will erase us from the records. Memories of us will be altered within the others, bar you, Sanguinius and Horus. We condemn ourselves by our sins and choices. By the dharma we have and the Wyrd. I chose myself to bear this burden, just as Sanguinius will do above Earth, where he faces ...will face Horus. We are the Chosen Ones. You more than I. An old Earth religion...father eradicated it. He founded it...heh....No greater love hath a man than he lay down his life for his brother. Not for millions…not for glory…not for fame. For one person, in the dark, where no one will ever know or see. I have been in the service of our father for more than a century, looking for you on my path. Sacrificing everything...my honour...my sanity...my reputation. Diogenes with his lamp, looking for an honest man willing to die for all the wrong reasons. At last, my duty is finished. Yours is just beginning. When the darkness comes, know this: You, and Corax, and Vulkan, and the Lion...even the Khan, are the right people, in the right place, at the right time. At the Wolftime

The Wolf King looked down at the man before him, a man whom he had once condemned as brother. Questions now filled him. He suppressed them, pushing them to the back of his mind. He would not soon forget these memories, layered and encrypted deep within his psyche for millennia more.

And slowly, his mind reeling in shock, yet still focused on his task...he pronounced sentence upon his brother, saying the words he knew he would say. Copying the vision word for word, as he had seen it unravel. He chained his brother and carried him, up unless staircases and broken halls. Up and up, till they reached a hall. The very first hall they had encountered the other. He released the chains, as he let his brother procede with the ritual, the ancient gate activating.

“I pronounce your sentence. The Emperor told me to bring you back alive, to face his sanction. If practical. Or back alive and in pieces. Or even dead. But I know you sentence yourself to a fate..I speak no further. Your judgement is as follows..brother. “

But the prophecy took a sidestep, as the seeds of change were planted. And from the mouth of Ngaru, the words flowed, in a voice layered with inflection and intonations that bespoke of bitterness beyond reckoning.

Chaos. Immorality. A message needed to be sent, etched in blood for all the galaxy to see. A warning. In the pursuit of my holy cause, I…did things. Terrible things. Unspeakable things. Humanity condemned me...us.., but it didn't matter because I...we.. believed I was right and the world was wrong. I believed I was the divine messenger. I believed I was…

“Chosen” whispered the Wolf King, as the portal began to open.

“I was found by the Eldar. By the Cabal and even the Slaan. They sent me visions....visions that showed me the terrible depths of my mistakes. My crimes and my...presumptions. Now, for all the innocents I slaughtered...I will do millennia of penance, waiting and watching. It was the only outcome that guaranteed a future for us. For all humanity. It was the only path I saw.”

Leman Russ's voice rose in gruffness and deepened in pitch, regret and agony mixed within the tonality that echoed through the emptiness of the ancient, blasted tomb complex.

“Remembered neither as Primarch nor as brother. Name expunged from the records and your legion absorbed within the Ultramarines. Remembered not as a messenger, nor reformer, nor prophet nor hero. I pray my choices have better results than yours. I sentence you to exile on Solemnace. I sentence you to exile from the light of the Emperor and to millennia of regret and remorse, with only yourself and your sins for company. I sentence you to exile for highest treason, done even in pursuit of your duty. I cast you into the wastes and to the mercy of the wilderness of space. By the power of the Emperor invested in me, I cast you unto the Immaterium and the Realm of the Maleficarum. May you find atonement. Emperor have mercy upon your soul.”

With that, the Dolmen Gate opened, sanctified and anointed in the blood of Ngaru years beforehand, the dried life fluid a potent psychic conduit. The Dolmen Gate opened with a great rippling of colour, shining with every shade conceivable to a mortal eye and beyond, ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths emitted from it, seen only in the eyes of a Primarch. Then, the portal between the ring of boundary stones seemed to fall away into a deep pit or tunnel, stretching beyond sight into a place unfathomably distant. Solemnace lay beyond. As did his fate. The Necrons he had destroyed had been cast down. Trazyn had finally been found. The trap lay beyond.

The Wolf King cast a final look at his brother before hurling him into the Webway. With a shout, he raised Mjalnar and cleft the Dolmen Gate in two, stone sparking and melting as the link was severed. Within the dimension, Ngaru tumbled and fell, running through the dark tunnel of swirling unlight and unnatural colours, groaning all the way as the Webway dimension lapped against it.

<<<>>>

Finally, at the end, he exited and collapsed, surrounded by a profusion of scarabs that assessed him with the interest of a human assessing an ant, stirring with a fell green light. Following the demands of his vision, he took step by painful step, wounded and fatigued beyond all measure. Past the displays of Eldar and Krork, past displays of dinosauria from ancient Earth, he walked despairingly towards the place of his doom.

He passed a display showing a Greater Daemon of Khorne locked in battle against an Ork Warboss, the immense hulks locked in mortal combat as Nobs armed with cleavers contested Bloodletters in unarmed combat. And a spark of interest flared in the Legion within him. Could things be nudged differently? Could Chaos be countered by Chaos? Malal-Malice, the corruptor of the Oblivionites...no. That was millennia in the future.

The Oblivion Stone lay across the galaxy, sequestered by the Nightmaw, via the Alpha Legion who had transferred it to them. Who would expect trickery and deception in the midst of a Necron gallery, by one who was so entrapped by fate?

Causality. The law of cause and effect. Every action has a reaction, whether its nature is known to us or not. Everything in the this universe is bound to the strings of Causality. Each person's situation and even emotional states are tempered through years of careful, causal manipulation. Tzeentch...even amongst the Chaos Gods, it is no more than a puppet who can see the strings, bound by the intent of an agency...a force beyond its will.

The insight stunned him, the intuitive spark filling his being. The Legion with him spoke, pressure and prescience and the intellect of the thousands that were within him filling him. Incomparable to Khanda-Parashur...no. Not now. In the future. The paths of the future could be changed. The currents of the River of Fate could be altered. There was always a choice.

The Idea of Man is man’s desired God. Laying nascent – the Kadmon knew of it. Born from human feelings and memes, it was a common consciousness that transcended individuality, acting as the ego of the world of Man. Man desired a reason for the destiny that kept transcending its knowledge. The collective unconsciousness. The Idea of Man provided that reason by manipulating human events through causality. It lay deep in the Ideal World of the Deep Warp, beyond the Well of Eternity, weaving its web of Causality to float up to the surface of the Materium.

[.//Data Stream-----author inscribed----unknown---temporal anomaly. Timstamp M58.203(?)]

What was the Ideal World? Governed by the subconscious desires of the Materium dwellers, it had the power to influence all Worlds. The final receptacle for the multidimensional souls/essence/spirit/immaterium nature of mortal beings. The gateway to the Universes Beyond. A nexus-hub-confluence. The Path to Moksha....Within the heart of the Ideal-Absolute, at its core, was the immense collection of intentionalities of all life forms, born and neverborn, made and designed. And here was the Deep Warp. The Nexus of the Deep Warp. Bleeding and alien and transmutable.

And what of the Primarchs? Purpose. Legion. The Emperor had deep, profound plans. Plans within plans. He sought to combat the Primordial Annihilator. To save humanity and by extension the galaxy. Whether He knew it or not, the subconscious within him influence him. Planned it. The Idea of Man that resided within the Ideal World sought survival. The collective dreams of humanity, past and present and future.

Primarchs. Designed and bred to rule, to lead.

“Men and Eldar and Ork are the leaping fish. We cannot alter the flow of the river we swim in. Even in succeeding in acting against or without following causality, we always fall back to the river of Fate. We cannot escape it. We cannot act against it. And thus is Father a Fish. Causality is the River” he muttered to himself, even as he reached out, feeling the wall of living metal reverberate with the presence. The Necrons knew he was here. They sensed the intruder within the halls. They would be here soon.

“The materium is the moon's shadow reflected on the water of Fate. And Primarchs might not just be a shadow reflected on the surface of the water, but a fish creating ripples in it. The Ideal world is the moon, untouchable for a fish.... no matter how much the water is stirred, the moon's image remains immutable in the end. But Primarchs...we are more than mere shadows...we are more than fish....” he groaned, before a spark of hope ignited within him. And realisation flooded the corners of his mind.

And so he began to laugh, as the Necrons phased into existence around him. As they came at him. And in an instant of raw, original intent, doing something that had never been planned....Ngaru Astaros deviated from the vision. He tore at the living metal walls, sought out with his psychic might the wires and filaments and cables within. And he tore at them.

And in that instant, a mighty Warboss and a Greater Daemon of Khorne were released within the halls of Solemnace, as Ngaru took to the shadows, a grin of bravado on his face. And in the butchery and slaughter that followed, he leapt here and there, spreading chaos in his wake. Destruction and annihilation marked his path.

In the vision, he had seen himself march to the very throne of Trazyn the Infinite, presenting himself, there to be preserved. There to make the offer, of freeing Khanda-Parashur from potential enslavement. A Primarch now rather than a Primarch later. An Illuminati Primarch, rarest amongst the treasures of the galaxy. And one who came willingly to Trazyn. That vision dissolved away, as Necrons screeched in binary code and machine warbles, as Khornate daemons ran free in their midst.

Journeying into the very heart of the collection, Ngaru laughed and wept at the liberation he had attained, a new path forged by himself, of his own choice. Dinosaurs raged through the halls, as did Eldar and Krork from long ago. Necrons collected from various across various Tomb Worlds, even a few splinter-shards of a C'tan, were released from their tesseract -prisons. The cosmic aberrations shrieked with ancient hunger, before unleashing their wrath upon biological being and Necron husk alike, supping on the delicious souls of all therein.

In wrath, Trazyn screeched as his collection was brought to order, preserving what he could, destroying what could not be tamed. Exotic species from another universe, the ancient Xel'naga, a cadre of whom had remained trapped within the collection, tore through the very heart of the collection. Discarnate intelligences with bodies of plasma linked by optical lattices of psionic might, they altered reality-states as they left, exiting from the universe as they tore a rift into the very fabric of the materium and the warp, exiting for realms unknown even to Trazyn.

And Trazyn SCREAMED! The loss of priceless artefacts, the loss of the Xel'naga, unique beings from a place and time unknown....but the worse was yet to be. As Ngaru worked his way closer to the Throne, he came upon a cadre of Enslavers. A thousand-strong, they floated in containment fields, locked in stasis. With a grim smile, he looked into the future, seeing the ossified husk of the single Enslaver that would remain. And with no small sense of satisfaction...Ngaru deactivated the stasis lock before fleeing even further into the darkness of the collection.

The cacophonous struggles that punctuated the entire collection would pale to what occurred in the future when Allaten of the Silver Skulls made his way through there. It was but a foreshadowing of events to come. A pale shade more than 20 millennia too early and entirely unplanned for. Too present a record of the conflicts that occurred in this time and place, of the specimens that escaped, are too numerous to record. Indeed, the descendant of the escaped dinosauria can be found on the feral world of Cretacia to this day. But it was one of the three outbreak events that presaged the eventual third and final breaking of Solemnace at the end of the Age of Dusk.

As Ngaru took his place upon the granite plinth, his baroque armour dented and scarred, he saw Trazyn marching towards him, mechanical rage apparent in every step. But the Necron stopped at the very edges of the cell, as he looked at the being before him. And a smug grin crossed his face, considering the Necron Overlord with all the satisfaction of a Cheshire.

“Give me a reason not to destroy you” the Necron answered coldly. Mechanically. Talons pressed themselves together, before a great gouge was torn into the wall, as Trazyn sought to control his rage.

“You have before you a Primarch. An Illuminati. One beyond all measure, pinnacle of your collection. Deep within your metal husk, your once-mortal soul has found a spark of enjoyment...amusement even, in the destruction and chaos that I brought. It amuses me. And for that you will spare me. For who else can boast of having an Illuminati within their collection?” Ngaru spoke composedly, as he settled into the plinth, shifting his weight and preparing for the inevitable.

“You speak truth. I have enjoyed myself – to a degree” the Necron answered reluctantly, the dry mechanical tone of his Gothic betraying no more emotion.

“But since it amuses me...I shall grant you a favour Primarch. We had dealings long ago, and you promised me a company of Astartes. And as you delivered the Luna Wolves unto me, and eventually yourself, what do you have to say to me, before I seal you away forever? The least I can do for an honoured...guest” Trazyn cackled, as the pylons began to buzz, projecting beams of force and energy that immobilised the Primarch, locking him into a bubble of temporal nullity.

“Nothing terrifies me now. Because nothing is beyond my ability to change. You will want vengeance in the future. I will want a solution. There will be a challenge far greater than either you or I have faced. And we will have to work together to stop it” Ngaru Astaros said, a half-smile punctuating his statement.

“You humans and your delusions” Trazyn cackled as the stasis field began to build in power.

“All.According.To.Plan” were the final words Ngaru Astaros muttered, finally finding contentment in the deep oblivion as his mind transited into a self-induced coma. Liberation would be at hand. There was time enough now. To dream.

I imagine Ngaru finishing his speech to his brother Russ, putting on a cylinder and walking away with a walking stick. And Imperial records shall only know him as Jack.

I loved that series. And I love this update. :D

This has multiple references across this and the main Age of Dusk, so I assume it's significant:

The Well of Eternity is the center of reality, from where space and time originate, as does the Warp. As the Eye of Terror pours forth from a byssos centered on the Crone Worlds of the Eldar, so is the Well of Eternity the place in the Warp that is the center of existence. The fulcrum and lever of the universe and reality.

Eloquently put sardaukar.

Please note, the Well of Eternity will be playing a rather large part in the finale of Age of Dusk too :D

A Brief History of the Stone Men, Iron Men and Granite Men
Author: Unit HX/14345-667-888-12324-55670 (Herald) & GX-202

An addendum to the main historical record. The Machina possessed three main classes of robot – The Stone Men, The Iron Men and by the time of the Magellan Reich, the Granite Men and occasional Lumos Man.

IRON (Inorganic Replicant.Organic Nexus) Men were artiloids, a class of advanced artificial humanoid machine workers of the Golden Age of Technology. I myself am descended from their systems, though considerably more advanced and sophisticated relative to them, given the proliferation of nanotechnology and picotechnology.

My own hardware, as an aforementioned Granite Men, incorporates a positronic core composed of iridium-platinum alloy, with logic gates based around the use of induced gaser (gamma ray laser) emissions, due to the high frequency. This is wrapped in a shell of boron carbide reinforced with carborundum, quartzoid and diamondoid materials to allow for immense strength and to prevent radiation from affecting the biological and silicon-based components of my operations. Baryte fills the interstices.

Alongside this are further photonic processing centres. Optical fibre neural networks and photo-fibre nerves fill the expanse, inundated in a biomechanical nanofluid that possessed the basic levels of biology required to produce an Empyrean signature.

The Stone Men however were the predescessors of both the Iron Men and Granite Men, who were based wholly on mechanosynthetic materials and utilised bio-nano-electro-mechanical means of processing. Stone Men utilised peptide-based biocomputing in the form of proteins tailored to have specific electrical properties were used to form logic gates with crystals of photocyclic proteins (such as derivatives of bacteriorhodopsin) as memory elements. Unlike us, they were wholly immune to the taint of the Warp, for they had no Empyrean signature.

These photocyclic proteins, which can be cycled through a number of stable states with laser light of various wavelengths, are able to store data at a density of 10^18 bits m-3. A cubic centimetre holocube memory of that era could store approximately 1 terabit. By contrast the Iron Men use similar biocomputing processes in their CPUs, though they use single protein molecules rather than the bulk-fabricated crystalline regions of proeins as components. They similarly make use of quartz glass ceramics as storage space, a system retained in Iron Men as well as in the current age of the Glass Man.

As for their mechanical nanocomputing cores, they are based on current designs of mechanical nanocomputers are based on sliding carbon rods that interact with each other at 'locks'. A small cluster of locks can be made to act as a logic gate, the basic element of a digital computer. The volume of each lock is about 10 nm^3, including all the necessary power supply and support systems.

The logic gates make up processor or memory units that are packed into three-dimensional arrays. Most designs use a low-level polymorphism that allows each section to act as either a processor or a memory element, with the hardware effectively redesigning itself to run each piece of software most efficiently. This enables massively parallel processing, or the use of different processors for each independent software object for true object-oriented systems.Using these mechanical elements as memory devices, data can be stored at a density of 10^26 bits m-3. This is roughly the same as the storage density of a baseline biological cellular nucleus.

The Lumos Men were a later innovation that straddled the developments of later ages. Inspired by the use of Eldar Spirit Stones and Infinity Circuits to hold their psyche after physical expiration, disability or death, the Machina and the Alhazen Cult, a cult of cyborgised empirical rationalists, academics, scientists and engineers that came to dominate the Magellan Reich, collaborated on the creation of a plasma intellect.

With the insights provided by Venerable Ancient Malistrum of the Astral Hammers Darwaza, many of whose Techmarines aided in the practical and operational aspects of the venture, as well as the efforts of the Astral Hamers to secure installations and logistics, the project proceeded afoot. The Lumos Men were far beyond the Stone Minds and Iron Men and Granite Men.

Derived from classic Tipleristic transhuman teachings from the early 3rd Millennium and Omega Point Theory, it hypothesised that in the extremely hot state of a collapsing universe falling towards a hypermassive black hole in a Big Crunch, superintelligences could exist as computational systems encoded into the high-energy particle interactions.

An intellect bound in high-energy plasma excitations, disembodied particles careening around in a superheated fluid medium. An intelligence that could write and alter data on the plasma, using non-plasma means to do so. This was made possible in conjunction with the use of elements of the Orch-OR (Orchestrated Objective Reduction), where the process of quantum decoherence, the loss of coherence or the ordering of the phase angles between system components in a quantum superposition – more concisely called wave function collapse.

Faster and more efficient than the computing substrates of all that came before, it was something that came close to matching the very nature of Dabaku, a being whose superintelligence resided within the quantum fabric of the universe itself, locked away in coiled dimensions and bounded within the Warp and the n-dimensions of spacetime.

The Lumos Men was a concept that operated well enough, for space was vast and it co-existed beside the various other platforms of the Machina as part of the overall diversity of computing, as well as their contributions in combating the apocalyptic threat of the Neo-Devourer.

The concept was one well-known to the Primarch-Emperor, Khanda Parashur, Prime Superintendent of the Machina, Supreme Commander of the Legions Astartes and Prime Nobilite of the Nobilite Houses. However at the close of the Age of Dusk, it was this very same technology that was used to unleash a beast beyond reckoning from the very cradle of Mankind, as from within the Storm of the Emperor's Extinction came a leviathan antigod, unplanned and unforeseen in the prophecies of the galaxy.

By the way, massive, immense, vast spoiler. Avoid reading for most readers, but I do invite comment on it from LordLucan.

Spoiler: I mentioned the Lumos Men. Plasma intelligences. Now. Imagine if Sol, the star which orbits Earth, was made intelligent. And it was angry. So very angry. And like a rabid dog, the Ophilim Kiasoz, Khaine, the Nightbringer and the C'tan find that a raging beast has entered the forest in which they hunt, consuming stars and moving through the Warp, a pearl of awarness hidden within it as the beast casts its rabid gaze upon Cadia and the Imperium of Travesties....

I hope it helps add a new device to your mythos, because that's about the last one I'm going to add. Considering I tossed in another Primarch...I just love seeing an epic confrontation. Let the War In Heaven commence

Spoiler: Plasma intelligences? That sounds like an artificially created C'tan. It'd be a nice addition to the building madness of the dissolution. have you ever heard of the Tyrant Star from Dark Heresy? Your idea seems like a similar version to that; a rogue, conscious star rampaging.

Spoiler: Yep. Heard of the Tyrant Star. This will be something similar to that. Essentially, it[Sol] awakens, devours the entire Sol system and starts rampaging through the Segmentum Solar, devouring other stars after breaking through the Storm of the Emperor's Extinction, after it is granted consciousness by Khanda Parashur, who has become a Power equivalent to the Chaos Gods. Its pro-human...well it makes an effort to avoid harming human-inhabited systems but has a predeliction for Chaos, Tau, Ork, Krork and anything else distinctly non-human in nature.

It's like a cross between a Tiger, Pit Bull, Canis Panther, Cape Buffalo, Great White Shark and Hippopotamus on steroids, turned up to 11 and a raving psychopath thats utterly vicious and sadistic - at the command of the power of Khanda Parashur. It is not a C'tan per se,because C'tan while plasma intellects existed at the beginning of time. This is more of a Seed AI programmed into plasma then cast into Sol.

Khanda Parashur is not a Chaos God but an Empyrean Power equivalent to an Old One, like Khaine, Qah or Eldanesh, and firmly rooted in the Materium and Immaterium, transcending both and certainly intended to be more powerful, at his lower limit the equal of the Void Dragon in terms of might. However as the Padishah of the Magellan Reich,he enacted soul-binding of the Astartes. To avoid the risk of betrayal, Chaplains, Librarians and anyone from a Company Commander up was required to be soul-bound to him, as well as any and all Nobilite across the Castes. This also extended to the Artilects who ran the infrastructure of the Empire and had a Warp signature linked to him.

The same extended to certain Eldar Craftworld who escaped the Milky Way and made their way to the dwarf galaxies. In exchange for protection, to put a long story short, a Greater Daemon of Slaanesh was confronted, some sorcery ensued and a Rubric was created that sends Eldar souls from the Craftworld directly into the Infinity Circuit, which is linked with the Primarch, in exchange for protection.

I did at one point mention Orks who are controlled. So there are the Wild Orks, who populated the galaxy ahead after being sent there by the Machina, the Feral Tyrannids and the Civil Orks of the Bene Yertanri, a matriarchal society of bioengineers and biotechnlogists who managed to break the genetic code of the Orks and pilot them onto the Primarch.

In short, life was pretty damn good and it was paradise - or close to it as practically possible in the grim darkness of the 31st to the 56th Millenniums, given the extensive military infrastructure required to garrison and keep the peace. And the constant Tyrannid attacks. And the Necron attacks. And the Neo-Devourer. And the Waaghs by the Wild Orks. And the constant revolts from Mechanicus Cults.

In short, many small wars but nothing ever big. Until the lat wave of Tyrannids restocking on biological resources, pursued by the Neo-Devourer, came through, given that they possessed an entire psychic beacon network that shone in the Empyrean and could be seen by them in the gulf of intergalactic space. The same way that the Astronomicon attracted the Tyrannids, the same happened to the Magellan Reich.

Long story short, the Magellanic galaxies were inundated and over millennia fought an epic war against the Neo-Devourer, culminating in an epic self-sacrifice that inundated more than 75% of the settled space in the galaxy with Warp storms and supernovae, while Khanda absorbed the remaining Craftworlds and most of the Nobilite and Machina Artilects, while choosing to assimilate several C'tan splinter shards as well, in order to boost his power and end the conflict once and for all. In short, he shattered his own empire and the dreams and prosperity of the civlisation there so that remnants of his people could survive. There are remnants maintained in the core of the galaxies, linked to the Halo Stars where they are rebuilding.

But in short, they are a broken fragment of a once-glorious civilisation looking to reestablish themselves. And they were told by the being they had worshipped as a god for some 20+ millennia to return to the cradle galaxy and link up with Vulkan, while Khanda goes off doing who knows what in god knows where. The activities of Khanda Parashur I will not detail, only the return, because its your story and generally speaking an actor of that power, I leave their actions to you to pilot. A character of that level of power is something that can affect the outcome of the Age of Dusk and I don't know how that will turn out.

It will however make the upcoming conflicts all that much more epic.

Spoiler: Being the equal of the Dragon doesn't ring true to me. I don't really do fixed 'power levels' like you are talking about. Khaine is the most powerful being in certain regions, but in the materium, the Void Dragon has no equals, and the Star father more powerful than an individual chaos god, because it is in his nature to be more powerful, but he's not neccessarily more powerful than Khaine, who is weaker than Khorne, because he draws at least part of his energy from the. I generally disregard strict power levels, as each cosmic entity in 60K fluctuates in power depending on local conditions, the warp's tides and the nature of their foes.

For instance, Revelation (shard of the Star father entity, attempting to find an achor point in reality currently), the Cegorach shard (which is the largest Deceiver shard, empowered by Harlequin soul energy as well as celestial power), Isha (the nurglitch queen, an old one empowered and embodied as a facet of nurgle) and Qah (ascended old one, which was deascended and reformed in the materium) are all roughly 'equal' with one another, but the precise nature of their abilities means sometimes one is more powerful in one battleground than another, or depending upon what pacts and alliances they have formed, and what power they have supped from. The various tiers of power are anarchic and inherently chaotic, especially towards the final battle of the Age of Dusk. It's all to play for, as it were, and no power is insurmountable or supreme at this point. The right ploy could unseat even the greatest entity from the patheon. Such is the nature of the Great game. Bear in mind, Lorgar, Doombreed and Ahriman are closing in on the cusps of joining this fractious pantheon of empyrean entities, unless they are thwarted somehow. That's why I liked that scene you wrote where a greater daemon had a go at the Anathema, and got obliterated; it was a risk on the daemon's part, but if the daemon had been cleverer or more cosmiscally connected, it might have had a chance!

I hope I've managed to get across how complex and unstable the rankings between the powers can be. However, also bear in mind that the more beings that ascend, the greater the crossover between the materium and the immaterium, and the deeper the universe sinks, towards the Nex-

Anywho, Khanda Parashar certainly seems to be a devious empyrean entity, and I suspect he'd be far stronger int he Magellenic regions, in comparison to the greater milky way, or the primary warp vortices. I will have to try and work your magellean pantheon into the greater narrative at some point. it'll be interesting to see how he'd interact with the others. :D

A Concise & Detailed Briefing of the Military Forces of the Magellan Reich Prior to the Magellan Apocalypse and Apotheosis of the Padishah-Primarch Khanda Parashur
Author: Unit HX/14345-667-888-12324-55670 (Herald)

I can with confidence reveal certain facts about the Magellan Reich military, without informing readers of this record of the more...concealed details of the military strength of the Reich.

It is a veteran military, blooded through constant warfare with Ork raiders and millennia of warfare against the Tyrannids and Neo-Devourer, as well as against daemonic incursion. The daemonic incursions primarily consist of Daemons of the Ruinous Powers, with occasional Chaos Astartes of the Traitor Legions. How they manage to reach the Magellan Reich is beyond explanation except that the Warp flows in mysterious ways.

The military forces of the Magellan Reich are known for their technological prowess, logistical capabilities and overall prowess across the spectrum of warfare. Astartes possess overall command of the forces and being divided into Military Districts, moderated by Artilects who act in council with Astartes and elected panhumans of the posthuman, exhuman and transhuman varieties, along with provolved species and client races.

There is extensive use of nanotechnology, biotechnology, genetic engineering in the forms of retroviral engineering, cybernetic enhancement and transgenic upgrades, combined with bionanotech augmentation. This makes for a markedly different flavour to the population of the Magellan Reich, and resulting differences in recruitment, selection, training, doctrine and technology.

We will only delve on the crucial factions of the military, though it should be noted that at a planetary and system level, there was extensive use of cybernetics amongst baseline humans and other panhuman factions, with cyberdemocracy mediated by the presence of Iron Men and STC systems, moderated by the Artilects who were bound to the Primarch-Emperor. It was a reflection of the Golden Age of Technology, accompanied by the vast industrial and economic strength of a post-scarcity society made possible by the technologies. And it was this that enabled them to survive the apocalyptic battles against the Neo-Devourer and Tyrannids.

Legions Astartes

The Legions Astartes of the Magellan Reich are notably different from the Adeptus Astartes, both the Mk. 1 Astartes and Mk. 2 Astartes or Novamarines of the Armageddon Imperium. While maintaining the same enhancements, they have gone a step further,
in requiring the power to combat the might of the Neo-Devourer.

There are two primary variant templates in use, the Oro Astartes and Mithran Astartes. What you might refer to as Mk. 3 variants, they enjoy significantly superior strength and endurance, combined with faster reflexes and reaction times, in contrast to the posthumans of the Imperium Secundus and Armageddon Imperium.

There are other speciality variants, kept in use due to their utility as well as tradition. The less-common variants are by no means inferior however. As with the Imperium Pentus/Armageddon Imperium, it is the same difference between Plasma Commando and Nova Astartes. Different training and tactical niche.

As a common note, the Astartes of the Reich utilise extensive nanomechanical enhancement, in the form of nanoactive blood seeded with monitors, defenders and fixer units, as well as bioassemblers and replicators to allow for accelerated healing and regeneration of limbs, organs and extremities. They also boost physiological performance and greatly enhance stamina and endurance of the Astartes.

A CNI (Cybernetic Neural Interface) is common, implanted into the skull base and connected to the brain stem and via nanowires to the amygdala, hypothalamus and hippocampus – allowing precise control of the autonomic nervous system and enhanced memory. As is the use of superconducting fibres replacing neural dendrites, and the colloidal neural disunification solution replacing in part the existing biological fluids, due to greater efficiency. Their myelin sheaths are also replaced with superconducting synthethic sheaths to boost reaction time. As such, the mean reaction time of those within the Legions Astartes of the Reich was in the range of 3-5 milliseconds.

LAIs (Limited Artificial Intelligences) moderate and maintain the Astartes in peak performance but cannot take control of the individual Astartes. Rather than the use of Machine Spirits based on bio-photonic computing using organo-crystals and organo-plastic chips, which are patterned after the neural networks of biological animals of high sentience such as whales, chimpanzees, cats and dogs, with frontal lobe restriction, they make use of silicon photonics, in the form of silicon crystals doped with germanium and other substances. They are far faster and more efficient though less adaptive than Machine Spirits and require extensive programming.

RIs (Restricted Intelligences) are based on pure optical systems, divorced from the use of electronics. They are high effficiency programs that excel within their specific domain and are more adaptable and varied than an LAI. They can operate within set parameters but lack true self-awareness. They are integrated within the command networks of the Astartes military forces and operate drones and battle nets.

They possess subdermal plating that augments and functions alongside the standard Black Carapace, with the use of honeycombed ticeramic-ferroceramic composite materials.

The final difference is the possession of encrypted, anti-jamming, frequency-hopping, adaptive-band radiotelepathy, enabled via the use of nanomachinery within the blood in conjunction with the CNI. This allows for seamless communication and coordination, with a level of coordination approaching that of the Legion Trygonis of the Realm of Fathers, though still not matching their telepathic clarity. It has the ability to function in any environment, unlike the psychic-based telepathy which can be nullified.

Astartes Tanit

The Astartes Tanit are powerful beings, derived from Mk.1 Astartes and their equals, often deployed in Commanderies or Darwaza Formations. Their difference from a baseline posthuman Astartes lies in their incremental improvements above that of the Astartes in terms of possessing a group cybermind – surpassing the power of the

A collective consciousness of sorts, it is made possible by the web of data that binds each Astartes in communication as a primary component-node. Enabling precise coordination on an immense scale, limited only by the speed of light and processing needs, it allows for intuitive understanding and coordination as a group.

This is made possible by the use of a biotech implant called the Cyber-Viral Implant (CVI), a combination between Astartes geneseed and a computer chip. Basic cognitive abilities are improved, as well as general intelligence, memory and the enabling of total recall capability. They also provide a motivational imperative, further boosting the established hypnomat indoctrination and conditioning, as well as education received, of the individual Astartes, to consider the interests of the collective paramount in all circumstances.

The loyalty however tends not to be in question, due to the soul-binding process establishing unity of purpose with both the Padishah-Primarch and the Astartes. However, this makes deviations and the actions of rogue group all the more disturbing, as it could indicate a breakdown in conditioning – an unlikely event – or a shadow purpose on the part of the Padishah-Primarch.

Tulkan Astartes
The Tulkan Astartes are descended from the bioengineering concept brought forward by scientists to combat the might of the Tyrannids and later the Neo-Devourer during their onslaught in the Age of Apocalypse. They build upon the previous templates of Oro Astartes and Mithran Astartes.

They bear more comparison with the Thunder Warriors and Adeptus Cuistodes, whom they were patterned after. It could be said that were an average Thunder Warrior to meet an average Tulkan Astartes, the Tulkan Astartes would have come out the better in a fight. Their implants are geneboosted and they outgrow even the likes of Ork Warbosses, towering on average between 3-3.5 metres, being as large as a Primarch or greater, though not as physically or psychically powerful.

Following conventional processes, the Astartes are further augmented through the extensive use of ferroceramic-ticeramic composites to ossify their musculoskeletal structure, alongside additional heterodiamond, nanotubes or beta carbon nitride, osmium diboride & rhenium boride, cubic boron nitride, silicon nitride, silicon carbide and hyperdiamond (aggregated diamond nanorods), sheathed in another layer of titanium nitride and synthdiamond covering the bone.

While retaining the Black Carapace, they retain an underskin bioweave of woven graphene and pandifico, a diamondoid composite. Panels of these armour their joints and the long bones of their body. Graphene is the stiffest, and has the greatest tensile strength of, all materials composed of the classical chemical elements, but as a bulk material it has relatively low tensile strength because layers of graphene are held together only by van der Waals forces. Woven graphene is the solution to this problem. The differing 'zigzag' and 'armchair' structures are integrated into it, serving as an additional base to the cybernetic enhancements employed in the Astartes.

Pandifico is an elastic diamondoid fibre composite material. Flexible and elastic like rubber, it is a fibrous material highly resistant to damage and near-impossible to shatter. When struck with hard kinetic force, the fibre structure allows it to flex and bend in a manner similar to polymers and metals. Due to their design they can pop out and do not stay bent or dented, with a shape memory. Pandifico can be attuned to have different degrees of hardness and flexibility. As with ancient composite bows of Old Earth, the fibre can be made to stretch at different speeds according to the strength and direction of an applied force. It is also capable of increasing or decreasing its resistance depending on its tension or distance stretched, thereby giving reduced resistance through the middle portion of the stretch while offering high or medium resistance as it approaches maximum stretch. This is integrated into an underskin bioweave that provides immense resistance to blunt force and stab trauma as well as ballistic trauma, cushioning them greatly.

The final addition to grant them their enourmous resilience is the inclusion of adamant within the structure of their black carapace, as an intermediate and outer layer. Adamant, a common material used for the creation of superstructure, building endoskeletons and starship hulls, it is mixture of carbon allotropes in which the carbon-carbon bonds are carefully arranged through nanoscale mechanochemistry to confer greater hardness, toughness, and flexibility than that of standard diamondoid. The greatest strength of crystalline diamond is also its greatest weakness; the regular structure makes it brittle, prone to fracture along cleavage planes. By including microcrystals of other carbon allotropes such as lonsdaleite and carbon nanotube within its diamond matrix, adamant is optimised for maximum durability.

But the exceptional addition that sets them apart is the presence of a secondary underskin bioweave composed of engineered cells drawn from psychic blanks or Pariahs. Spliced into their genes during the bioengineering process, they possess a resistance to the Warp due this innate aspect as a Neophyte. At the stage of the carapce implantation, this bioweave is added – which grants them the ability to nullify the Warp.

The final aspect of their engineering is a temporal neurocybernetic graft that grants them accelerated perception at least 5 seconds ahead of their opponents. A Warp-based artefact, it allows for maintaining a state of hybrid consciousness and precognition of an event and actions up to 5 seconds ahead of the present.

In short, they require an extreme level of firepower and conventional munitions to injure and destroy, due to the immense amount of armature defending them.

They are notable for their use in assault and siege warfare, as they are often deployed into the most brutal conditions and are not deployed as a Legion, as the use of this variant of Astartes is a heavy investment in both time, resources and training, even for a post-scarcity, high-abundance civilisation like the Magellan Reich.

A Darwaza of 3000 are employed as the Praetorians of the Padishah-Primarch of the Magellan Reich. They are notable for further extensive cyborgisation, as they are all soul-bound to the Padishah-Primarch and as such are blinded and make use of extensive auto-senses and visual cogitators.

The numbers of these elite and exceptional Astartes variants were thinned considerably during the apocalyptic Neo-Devourer Wars and Tyrannic Wars, but their presence in a theatre of operations was also the element that turned a battle from defeat into victory, as they were a bulwark against which the Tyrannids could never surmount. Against the Neo-Devourers, they are noted to have been the single force capable of generating hesitancy and fear reactions in the otherwise unstoppable juggernaut, due to their perceived soulless nature.

Oro Astartes

The Oro Astartes are noted for their difference in biology and capability compared to other Astartes. Deployed in Darwaza, Impi, Kikosi or Commandery formations. They are a common template used throughout the Legions, Commanderies and Impi formations, often for missions requiring mental and physical endurance, physical and psychological resilience. Siegecraft, peacekeeping, defence-in-depth and garrison missions are their forte.

Based around the resilient Sons of Antaeus, who originated from the 21st Founding of the Imperium Secundus, they adopted the same bioengineering methods, of boosting the functioning of the Ossmodula & Biscopea during development and Larramans Organ, Oolitic kidney and Preomnor during normal functioning. Their hypothalamus is also enhanced and its functioning boosted, boosting physical growth and size to levels rivalling that of the largest Ork Nobs, with the average Oro Astartes matching them in size, stature and physical strength and able to wrestle and dominate them when equipped with Terminator armour.

Their bones, rather than standard human calcium hydroxyapatite bioceramic integrating ceramic carbides and other exotic materials, instead are replaced entirely with adamantium-titanium nanofoam composite, reinforced with boron carbide nanotubes and ferroceramic sheaths. Since they are both light and extremely strong, well above even the established strength of ceramics used by the Astartes, this grants them a durability attested to by consistently acting as the anvil in pincer movements against enemies, or as an unstoppable hammer blow able to rupture the mightiest defences.

The other marked difference is in the black carapace, which is reinforced with hyperdiamond (aggregated diamond nanorods), a form of ultrahard fullerite. Panels of it reinforce the black carapace, while the interstitial spaces are filled with titanium diboride nanotube weave. They also make use of the synskin on top of the black carapace – augmenting strength and environmental resilience.

Mithran Astartes

The most common template of enhancement and most prolific of the Astartes templates, it is the most economical, cost-effective balance of resources in terms of bioengineering, retroviral enhancement, gene therapy, cybernetics, neural grafting and transgenic splicing applied to Astartes.

Superior to the Chapterborn Mk.1 Astarte in most conceivable ways and using the same geneseed and bioengineering process though acclerated to within a period of 3 years, they are comparable to the Mk 2. Astartes, the Nova Marines of the Armageddon Imperium, in enjoying significant strength and endurance gains, at least 35% stronger than an equivalent Mk.1 Astartes of the Great Crusade Era or Imperium Secundus, with greater cardiovascular functioning due to the use of CVT (Cardiovascular Turbopump) systems which act as a tertiary distributed heart.

Their bones, aside from the standard ceramic carbides used in the creation process, are also reinforced with filaments of ferroceramics, plastitanium and plasteel in small amounts, especially around the joints of the body. This grants their bones tremendous compressive strength and shearing strength relative to Mk.1 Astartes.

Armature

There is use of various Marks of Astartes Power Armour but there is an overall preference for the Mk X,which incorporates different multiple technologies.

Those that operate far from resupply and headquarters, or are more mobile and utilising guerilla warfare and other unconventional warfare, like to make use of the Mk. 9 Astartes Power Armour, which is the Mk. 8, except incorporating Reductor Fields and camo-cloak attachments.

Astartes Power Armour
Tracing the descent of the Power Armour and keeping in mind the relative proliferation of STC technologiy, artilects and the overall state of sophistication and industrial armour, the 3 main types of armour used are the Mk XV Power Armour, Terminator Tactical Dreadnought Armour and Stealth. Other marks of armour are used, with the ones highlighted here being preferred for any number of reasons, from tactical-operational and logistical to tradition.

Mk IX Rhodesia Pattern: The Rhodesia pattern is notable for its use of a Reductor Field and additional camo-cloak attachments, as well as the use of an optical film that distorted to match the background environment and broke up their silhoutte.

Traditionalists originally opposed this, though were forced to obey by the decree of the Padishah-Primarch, who was quoted as “...seeking to shove common sense and practicality into the Astartes brain and make them all not only fearless but eminently reasonable and rational.”

Mk X Griffith Pattern: The Mk X is a redesign of the fundamentals of power armour. Acknowledging that with the increase in threats arising from psykers, as well as the presence of highly destructive weapons in the battlefield capable of defeating Astartes Power Armour, as witnessed in the railgun weaponry of the Tau Septs – a countermeasure was needed. In response, Aegis Armour was covertly retrieved from Grey Knights, as was Runic Armour from Space Wolf Rune Priests. Taken together, runic wards of protection are layered within the suit, as well as additional layers of hyperdiamond and ferroceramic, improving the durability of the suit.

Many of the changes were made possible by the presence of STC assemblers and databases, as well as the personal involvement of the Primarch Khanda in augmenting the power of these Marks of Astartes Power Armour.

Fusion power packs are boosted in performance. Strength is enhanced via both the use of an armoured titanium nanocomposite body suit worn over the black carapace and a layer of reactive metal liquid crystals integrated into the armour, in addition to the servomotors and electromotive fibres, as well as additional myomerfibril artificial muscle.

Further protection was provided by the use of hydrostatic gel layers which serves to cushion the wearer and regulate body temperature. It works in conjunction with the bodysuit to ensure comfort and protection. The bodysuit has reactive nanofabrics which can serve to monitor physiological markers and act as a torniquette. A layer of liquid nanocrystals improves the resilience by acting to reduce kinetic impacts and absorb the heat of energy attacks, allowing Astartes to survive at least one point-blank shot from an Inferno Pistol.

Medical systems provide extra drugs and narcotics, synthesising them from feedstock and providing them to the wearer. Biofoam, a self-sealing, space-filling coagulant and an antibacterial, tissue-regenerative foam polymer This foam keeps damaged organs in place and helps stop bleeding and hemorrhaging from wounds such as; lacerations, abrasions, contusions, punctures, thermal and/or electric burn wounds, before being absorbed harmlessly into the body to provide nutrition and material for healing and regeneration.

Finally, it incorporates a builtin Reductor Field, increasing the survivability of the Marine greatly and extending battlefield life expectancy as well as combat effectiveness and combat efficiency.

Mk XV Zodd Pattern: The Zodd Pattern is a streamlined evolution rather than a revolution of the standard Astartes armour used in the Imperium Secundus and currently in the Imperium Pentus. Significantly similar and recognisable, the difference lies in the superior power-to-weight ratio, higher system endurance, superior armour performance the greater computing power, due to using a hybrid system of both Machine Spirit cogitator and Limited Artificial Intelligence data agent for computing purposes. The ceramite composition is significantly different as well, with greater use of plastitanium and ferroceramics, as well as heterodiamond-carborundum composite.

Scalloped and sloped to deflect and resist ballistic attacks, stab trauma, slash trauma and other physical threats, it incorporates personal energy shielding, a device common to all soldiery of the Magellan Reich.

They make particular use of EM-ACPART shielding, a system where a linear induction motor accelerates a cloud of particles to hypervelocity speeds, encasing the user in an electromagnetic force barrier that is near-solid. This is the outer shield, with an inner shield consisting of the conversion field.

Finally, the system makes use phased array optics to project distorting holographic images while stationary, as well as provide stealth for prolonged periods in the infrared, visible and UV frequencies. Mobile thermoptic camouflage renders the wearer invisible in the thermal and visual frequencies. They function similarly to the holo-suits but provide greater stealth. In passive mode, this leads to it distorting colours and reflecting the background when in the field.

It maintains attachments for the use of camo-cloaks, adopting the doctrine of the Nemenmarines Commandery, who emphasise the use of stealth and camouflage in the field.

Astartes Terminator Armour
Mk II Tactical Dreadnought Armour: A Mk II Terminator Armour is different due to the inclusion of extensive energy shielding. Iron Halo's are incorporated into the Terminator suit, as are a Refractor Field and Reductor Field. This is enabled by the inclusion of a fusion pack within the Terminator armour.

Included as well is a domino field, which generates a visual distortion of the Terminator armour and makes it harder to attack it from range or to precisely damage it in close combat. When stationary, it allows the Terminator suit to blend into the background and camouflage itself.

Shadowhound Stealth Suit
The Shadowhound Stealth Suit represents a revolution by virtue of it incorporating incremental improvements accumulated into a single platform that is this suit. It is based around the Deathwatch Scout Armour of the Dark Angels Legion.

It incorporates photoreactive panels that mimic the textures, patterns and background radiation across the UV, infrared and visual wavelengths.

When active the user becomes as good as invisible, with a very low signature in the infrared and UV range, as well as being essentially invisible. In passive mode it simply camouflages itself by mimicking the surface it is in contact with.

Organisational Structure
The organisational differences are the retention of the core Legion system, with the Legions divided into Grand Companies of up to 5000 Astartes led by a Grand Master/Battle-Captain or equivalent, with smaller Great Companies/Chapters/Fellowships of up to a 1000 Astartes led by a Chapter Master/Senior Captain/Great Fellow. The core system still consists of squads of 10 Astartes as components of a Company of 100 Astartes.

It should be noted that while the Legions have control over their own functions, all Legion senior commanders of rank greater than Sergeant, Dreadnoughts, are required to undergo a soul-binding ritual to link them to the Primarch-Padishah for the purpose of ensuring loyalty and a degree of control over them. Any and all psykers, from Sanctioned Psyker to Astropath, Navigator, Nobilite, Pariah, Prognosticator or Librarian are also required to undergo soul-binding with the Primarch-Padishah.

Legions. The primogenitor Legions remain the core of the Astartes and the smallest size of a Legion is a mandated minimum strength of at least 10 000 Astartes, though the optimal recommended size for a Legion is set at 30 Great Companies for a strength of 30 000 Astartes. They are organised into Grand Companies of up to 5000 Astartes, or Great Companies/Chapters of 1000.

Commandery. Similar to the Commanderies of the Armageddon Imperum/Imperium Pentus, the Commanderies are a doctrine taken wholesale and adopted by the Magellan Reich due to their utility and ability to create and deploy independent units to operate with their own doctrine. Ranging from 2000-2500 Astartes, divided into Companies led by Captains and commanded by Commandery Masters, they are the exception to the soul-binding ritual required of the Astartes of the Magellan Reich. Understanding the need for honest men capable of speaking truth to power without fear, they are an instrument crafted by the Primarch-Padishah as a measure of controlling the Astartes and regulating them. Commanderies can exceed this size given prior approval.

Kikosi. A Kikosi functions around the formation of Battle-Companies, where each Company possesses ~600 Marines for deployment. A Kikosi can then extend in number to include up to 25 Battle-Companies, for a strength of 15 000.

Darwaza. Organised into bodies of 3000, or 30 Companies, the Darwaza is a mobile fleet-based formation that operates as a coherent whole, with 10 Companies operating together at any time. Superbly equipped and stocked due to their self-reliant logistics and possession of foundry ships in their reserves, they operate in Chapter-strength whenever possible and never engage in small-scale campaigns, echoing the doctrine of the Minotaurs Chapter of the Imperium Secundus. A roving force of ruination and destruction, a Darwaza is designed to keep the peace and exist as an independent measure of control to check the Astartes. As such, Darwaza formations are exempt from the soul-binding standard in the Legions.

Impi. This pattern of organisation follows the War Clan system of the Sons of Medusa Chapter, for a total maximum of up to 20 War Clans, for a total strength of 6000 Astartes. These draw from a Reserve Force of 500 Neophytes and 3 Reserve Companies.

Legions Astartes Armaments

In combating the might of the Neo-Devourer, relativistic plasma beams and LINAC (Linear Accelerator) weaponry combining hybrid coil-gauss technologies became a standard part of their armament, as did the use of omnitools – mobile devices incorporating computer microframes, sensors, multitools and a nanomachine microfacturing fabricator. These allowed for the spontaneous creation of silicon carbide blades, as well as field repair abilities.

Railguns, rail rifles and plasma are common, as is the use of bolters and weapons such as thermic chainblades – chainblades heated to temperatures hot enough to melt steel and thus more deadly than standard chainswords. Silicon carbide punch-blades are kept within the forearms of their armour and can be extended to form dual blades for use in emergency situations.

For standard loadouts, the primary weapons tend to vary between either bolter weapons or plasma weaponry. A standard secondary weapon is the Conflagaration Infernus Pistol – a pattern of Inferno Pistol dating from the Golden Age of Technology. The use of Vortex grenades, singularity grenades and plasma grenades is also common.

Energy Weapons

The D-Cannons or Distortion Cannons use the same technology which allows ships to enter the nightmare realm of the Warp. The D-Cannon causes an area of the material universe to momentarily collapse in on itself, essentially creating a miniature warp hole. If the target is lucky then violent, complex gravitational forces will merely tear it to pieces, guaranteeing almost certain death to living creatures or total wreckage if a vehicle. Otherwise, it gets displaced into the Warp itself.

The Graviton Gun The weapon fires a stream of particles which affects the local gravitational field of a target area, making the targeted object either far heavier or lighter depending on the weapon's setting. The gun also creates a bass rumble as the waves affect the local air pressure, causing the air to vibrate. The effect is generally non-lethal and can be used to incapacitate foes who need to be captured alive, but the power of the graviton gun's highest settings is sufficient to rupture organs and crack bones even inside armour.

Some living targets will be affected more variably; a very large creature may be killed under excessive weight, but most targets will either be slowed or completely immobilised. The graviton gun is very useful when fighting on a star ship or a null gravity environment, as well as for for demolition and siege work, as it is most effective against massive objects such as bunkers or fortifications, where the building's great mass can be used against it, causing it to collapse.

EM Cannons, also called 'Banshees', are electromagnetic weapons that sends rapid pulses of exceptionally strong electromagnetic energy resulting in a 1.63 x 10^5 J blast that can force its way part most known personal shield technology and produces a dramatic shearing effect which quickly destroys the targets material structure. It is named for the fact that in an atmosphere, the pulse creates an atmospheric disturbance similar to a quasi-human scream at 180 dB. Extremely effective against Machina and Necrons, as it disrupts electromagnetic-based computing systems and scrambles data. Also vaporises most biological materials...

The UV Cannon fires a concentrated pulse of ultraviolet energy capable of burning all the flesh and organs from an unarmoured human target, and literally cooking an armoured target in their armour. It is a good general-purpose weapon, able to deal with all kinds of threats. What the lasrifle was to the Imperial Guard is the standard weapon to the Magellan Reichsmact, only much more effective, second only to plasma weaponry.

The Microwave projector is a weapon that fires an intense and tightly focused microwave pulse that can damage both human and mechanized target, with the ability to key the frequency to specific materials in order to agitate them above the norm. It is utterly devastating and can be focused into a narrowband maser to extend its range. For mundane purposes it can also be used to cook field rations.

Projectile Weapons

Aside from the standard spectrum of projectile weaponry available to Astartes, and the accompanying munitions, there are some exotic weapons particular to the Magellan Reich and specific to the doctrine of certain Legions and subdivisions of the Astartes.

The first is sonic weaponry. Using the power of sonic and ultrasonics, combined with compact fusion reactors, they use them to affect the molecular structure of objects, vibrating them apart on a micrometer scale and disrupting biological systems and physical structure through the horrendous vibrational energy.

The second is the use of molecular inhibitor rounds and stasis rounds. While a stasis round will generate a temporary stasis field around the target, the molecular inhibitor round upon impact creates a field inhibiting all molecular motion within an area conforming to the target's shape. This creates a freezing effect comparable to several hours of exposure to absolute zero. The resulting sculptures have been described as eerie, aesthetically pleasing and haunting, as well as capable of being shattered with ease.

The third is a weapon used by the Dusk Raider Legion and their Successors. A Liquifuer round, the chemical released is a wide-spectrum catalyst designed to break down complex organic molecular bonds and trigger rapid transmutation in metal alloys, synthetic materials, polymers and ceramics. The effect on mechanical and biological targets is destructive to say the least. An impact on an unarmoured human target is a combined liquefaction and evaporation, creating a brief puff of gas and leaving semi-solid remnants behind. The remnants have been described as unpleasant to ingest by members of both the Dusk Raiders and War Hound Legion....though members of the Padishah Praetorians maintain it makes for a good curry.

Magellan Reichsmacht

PDF
Planetary Defence Forces are composed of conscripted citizen-soldiers led by a core group of professionals. The majority of citizens are required to serve 5 years of their life within the military forces of the PDF, before passing through a 20 year reservist cycle. This results in a PDF that is well-trained, disciplined and possessed of a professional core, with strong leadership and competent generalship.

Medical technology is highly advanced in the Magellan Reich. In theory, a person can live an extremely healthy, illness free life with a maximum lifespan of 175 years and average life expectancy of 150 years. The average person lives a competent, active lifestyle far up into their 130's, and the average retirement age on most worlds is 120 years old. Genetic engineering and biotechnology eradicated the most deadly illnesses and diseases that had plagued humanity.

The ability to identify and correct potential health risks and psyker genes, well before an infant was born, paved the way for a genetically healthy and vibrant society seen prior to the Magellan Reich's Age of Apocalypse and current return to the Milky Way. Modern artificial limbs and organs, whether genetically cloned or manufactured, are widely available on most worlds.

Medicine has evolved far beyond what the Imperium could once imagine. Most people in the Magellan Reich are injected with dormant medicines that activate semi-autonomously whenever certain illnesses occur, and nano-intelligent machines inhabitant most humans bodies, continuously scrubbing and fixing, as well as producing antibiotics and a host of other specially tailored medicines.

This allows for the creation of a well-trained and disciplined force, led by a core of professionals, on every world in the Magellan Reich. The PDFs compare well on average with the Imperial Guard regiments of the Imperium Secundus, such as the Elysian Drop Troopers, Cadian Shock Troops and Tanith Infantry Regiments of the Imperium Secundus, specifically during the 41st Millennium.

Standard firearms for troops are lasrifles and plasma rifles, due to the extensive industrialisation and buildup. Bolters are standard support firearms with large arsenals kept in storage.

PSG
Planetary Spaceguard are the forces responsible for keeping the space channels and shipping of interplanetary and intrasystem space secure from piratical activity and criminal elements, such as smuggling and trafficking in forbidden technologies, psykers, theotech, illegal genetics and illegal narcotics.

They operate from System Battlecarriers and System Defence Monitors. Battlecarriers are large vessels designed to deploy large amounts of autonomous drones for security and surveillance, as well as mounting missiles and plasma lances, while System Defence Monitors are large ships designed purely around the concept of being fast, mobile platforms designed for hunter-killer duties and interdiction.

Imperial Heer
The Imperial Heer is a diverse force and all member worlds are required to provide soldiery towards the Heer, without exception. They make extensive use of basic retroviral engineering and gene therapy to fix minor congenital defects, as well as minor bioaugmentation in the form of retinal nanoimplants or ocular bionics and basic genetic enhancements.

They are reminiscent of the Imperial Army of the Great Crusade, due to the extensive use of STC, as well as the use of large numbers of cloned fabricants, replicants, suboids and neurally-resocialised individuals within their soldiery, alongside volunteer troops and conscripts.

Imperial Armada
The Imperial Armada is a part of the Reichsmacht and is responsible for operations in orbit and space, with the ability to deploy vast amounts of firepower ranging in the teratons from their capital vessels, and enact sanction of worlds via orbital bombardment and even the destruction of entire star systems. Many of the ships are run by a combination of Machine Spirits and Artificial Intellects, bound to an Astropath and Navigator who are linked to the systems. They are in turn soul-bound to Khanda-Parashur.

Highly mobile, their main armaments consist of nova cannons, plasma lance weaponry, turbolasers, picotech-boosted thermonuclear weaponry and positron plasma lances (antimatter plasma lances). They also make use of ion-stream lances which fire a highly-concentrated beam of ions at near-FTL speeds at their target, bombarding the target surface with a stead stream of particle-fire. The target's surface is shredded of its atomic makeup, its electric systems short out, and its crew die from the extreme radiation.

Even then, they still possess Point Singularity Projectors, which project quantum singularities capable of being neutralised only by Warp-based or gravity-based shielding systems, and Distortion Cannons which open a vortex into the Warp and cause Materium fractures sufficient to crack the toughest of hulls.

Defensively, their armour is a thick composite of diamondoid-carborundumoid-adamantium composite, with heavy reinforcements of ferroceramic, plasma steel, diamasteel and plastitanium. Super-capital ships mount photon walls, neutronium and anti-matter plate, alongside void shields and extensive plasma-graviton shielding and EM-ACPart (Electromagnetic-Accelerated Particle) shielding. This grants a resilience well above that of ships of the Imperium Secundus and even the Necrons.

Similarly, the surface is dotted with a combination of Electromagnetic Webs which reinforce the hull and spread the energy of kinetic weapons and directed energy weapons across a larger armour surface, dissipating energy over a larger area; singularity projectors that absorb and dissipate the energy of projectiles; graviton-plasma sheathes that destroy any attacks below a certain mass-energy equivalence threshold and antimatter plate, which acts against all matter-based attacks.

They operate in fleets based around a large battlefortress, usually the size of a planetoid and 2500 km in diameter. The main patterns used are the Sol Pattern and Golgannath Pattern. These immense battlestations are capable as acting as command centres, fleet foundries, dockyards, manufactories, living space and training facilities in one. They are often guarded by a fleet numbering in the thousands, usually consisting of super-capital ships: battleships, battleship-destroyers, grand cruisers, command carriers, fleet carrier, star destroyers and battle barges.

The capital ships ranging below the super-capitals, which act as flagships and fleet command vessels are supported in their operations by escort carriers, heavy cruisers, destroyers, medium cruisers, defence cruisers, strike cruisers and frigates of various types. Foundry ships and fleet tenders are included in this category. A notable class of ship used is the drone frigate, which deploys drones of various configurations for defensive and offensive purposes. Battlecruisers are a common sight, a transition point between capital and super-capital classes.

Corvettes are the smallest capital class and operate as fleet defenders designed to counter fighter, system defence craft and independent squadrons tasked with raiding and harassing supply lines, as well as other intrasystem and interplanetary operations. These can include freighters, defence monitors and transports.

Fighters are used for aerospace operations in planetary atmospheres, for fleet defence and fleet assault, as well as in support of planetary operations.

The technology of the Magellan Reich is centred around the use of the GID or Gravity Impeller Drive. Gravity Impeller Drives are compact drive units that create graviton/anti-graviton fields in such a way as to maneuver the vessel through both real-space and the FTL vortex. The GID steers the vessel at sublight speeds more effectively than conventional inertia—based thrusters and replaces most chemical propulsion systems. They provide anti-grav lift capabilities for operating within an atmosphere, allowing smaller spacecraft the ability to land on any planetary surface, as well as accelerations, velocities and performance surpassing all but the most elite of flyers.

WMDs (Weapons of Mass Destruction)

Thermonuclear weaponry and anti-matter weaponry are commonly used at a tactical, strategic and theatre level of operations, due to their versatility and ability to devastate entire areas. Neutron bombs, capable of targeting biological problems while preserving physical infrastructure, is used extensively against Tyrannid incursions. Gaser (Gamma-Ray Lasers) bombs are also routinely used.

Relativistic weaponry accelerated to a minimum of 90% light-speed is used extensively in bombarding enemy-held worlds of little value, as well as to breach planetary shields. They are also used in space on opponents such as the Tyrannids and Neo-Devourer, or on worlds claimed and under processng by Tyrannid Hive Fleets or Neo-Devourer fleets.

Cyclonic Torpedoes are another commonly used method, as are virus bombs for Exterminatus, either via planetary destruction of atmosphere incineration.

NaMiRNBC (Nanomechanical, Micromechanical, Radiological, Nuclear, Biological & Chemical) warfare was used as a standard method of response to Neo-Devourer incursions, blanketing an entire theatre in nanoswarms and micromachinery to disrupt and destroy assets, before deploying into the greatly altered environment.Adopted in response to the method of Orks, Tyrannid and Neo-Devourer life form, they employ the same strategem of total warfare, bring an anti-ecology of microscopic agents to fight and destroy the ecology of the invading enemy.

Technology of Note in the Magellan Reich

Cermets: Cermets are advanced ceramics held within a metal matrix, with metal content less than 20%. The best-known cermet, whose origin was from the Golden Age of Technology, is adamantium. Adamantium is a member of this family. Formed under extreme high pressure Has a dull, almost matt, silvery finish and is often mistaken for a metal. ' Adamantia' is a group name and covers several materials including the primary 'Adamantium' from which the group takes it name. It is hard to tell the materials apart, but at the basic level the material is the same and has as much to due with the specifics of manufacture. The Cult name them after a number, with Adamantium-1 being the first invented. The Imperium make heavy use of Adamantium-13. There are several Imperial names for the various materials depending on which sector of space you are in. [Also: Silverstone, Ironstone, Irotal, Metalstone, Metrock, Metstone, Ceraferrium, Obdurite and Ortal]

Cyber-Retina: Retinal enhancements are constucted non-invasively by the use of nanoassemblers. Selected light-receptor cells within the retina are replaced with artificial light detectors. These replacements are capable of operating in a wider range of wavelengths and at greater sensitivity.

In some cases the entire surface layer of the retina may be replaced with synthetic photodetectors. Such a total replacement is usually built in several stages so that the original retinal layer may be used to finely calibrate the new detectors.

The enhanced retina is capable of seeing in a visual range that it extended into the infrared, and making use of light as dim as moonlight as if as bright as day. The detectors actually have an almost perfect quantum efficiency, but the image must be processed to eliminate graininess at lower intensities. The detector density in the centre of the visual field is as much as ten times the natural level, so that visual acuity may be boosted by more than a factor of three on command. This is accomplished by expanding the output from the central regions to fill most of the visual field A distorted distribution at the edges of the field is usually introduced stetching from the edges of the magnified region to the edges of the retina. This ensures that some detection of peripheral movement is still possible.

In addition to these major improvements there are many smaller enhancements. The synthetic photodetectors are all sensitive to a range of colours, so that there is no loss of colour vision in dim light. A further option allows increased sensitivity to polarisation, although this is of limited use in most situations. The detectors are engineered to automatically adjust sensitivity to damp sudden flashes that would
otherwise lead to temporary blindness.

The replacement detectors are also considerably more robust than the replaced cells In the case of damage the enhancement incorporates an auto-repair system that is capable of repairing a substantial degree of damage such as that caused by brief exposure to lasers. Repairs of this type usually take several hours. More extensive damage would, of course, require retinal or ocular replacement.

The processing layers of the retina are also augmented by artificial neurons that can be used to provide various forms of image processing: maximum-entropy deconvolution, colour balance modification, increased sensitivity to edges and many other options. The neural net is also linked to a nanocomputer that can be used to convert visual data into more conventional formats for recording. All of these features, as well as sensitivity and colour range, are controlled via a pop-up toolkit accessed through an in-built neural interface.

Theotechnology: Involves the manipulation of spacetime metrices and the bedrock of reality itself, the quantum foam. Quantum Foam is the series of subatomic disturbances in space time. Quantum Mechanics states that at the subatomic level of a Planck Length that the uncertainty principle comes into play. Essentially that means that space time at such a level can not be exactly measured or determined since it can exist one moment and not exist the next all without violation of the law of conservation.

It is also called space time foam based on the fact that Einstein stated in his theory of relativity that gravity and space time are one. This means that any disturbances on a the quantum level would effect space time as a whole.

In short, it allows for the very manipulation of reality itself, altering the physical constants of the universe and the laws of physics.

Arcanotechnology: Arcanotechnology is the use of cosmic energies and forces allowing for the Materium to be warped and altered using non-Euclidean geometries and arcane energies. Tapping the Warp and exotic forces beyond the Warp, they are a form of technosorcery and magitech equalling and in many cases surpassing the Eldar's mastery of altering and engineering Warp-based technologies.

Hyperdrive & Hyperspace: A hyperdrive is a device that is used to travel between systems at interstellar velocities, achieved by transitioning into a quantum wavefront that sends the object as a coherent quantum signal through higher dimensions towards the desires point in the universe. A trans-hyperdrive is able to warp to higher levels of hyperspace. Gravity as a force transcends the various levels of hyperspace, a planar domain of compressed space, variable geometries and altered dimensional topologies.

Alcubierre Drive: Involving use of the Alcubierre Metric, it distorts spacetime and wraps a volume within a bubble of spacetime that is moved relative to the universe, preserving relativity. A theotechnology artefact and produced by the artilects.

Foldspace: A foldspace phenomenon involves warping n-dimensional space, up to the level of the quantum foam, in order to transport/translocate an object across universes, spacetime and galaxies instantaneously.

Author's Critical Notes:
I want to make it clear that I decided to go with the whole posthuman archetye and frame the Magellan Reich as a civilisation that was transcendant in conventional human terms at its peak. However, what returns to the Milky Way is far reduced in its glory and lacking in much of the technological might, though still very formidable. It will be covered in later sections. They surpassed the Golden Age of Technology, ran into the Neo-Devourers and got swamped by both a strategic error and the sheer numbers of the Neo-Devourer, before deciding to return.

Humanity certainly won't become extinct, and it is seeded elsewhere in the cosmos. But the Reich that comes to reinforce the Imperium Pentus towards the ending battles of the Age of Dusk is in its dusk, altered and adapted to survive below the technological threshold of its preceding empire.

In honesty these are more author's notes for private use than anything but I decided to put it up. An altered version listing the ORBAT (Order of Battle) for the Reich forces within the Milky Way will be put up eventually. Anyway, next up -> Ngaru Astaros escapes/is rescued from the heart of Trazyn's collection. Oh, and Mars gets destroyed in a spectacular fashion.

Hey. Long break over. But I kind of figured out what happened to the Doom of Malantai. It was a Great White Shark swimming in the Great Ocean. And then it met an Orca - which is the only species that actively feeds on Great White Sharks. How unfortunate for the Doom of Malantai. How lucky for all those Eldar souls.

Also, how do you feel about

Spoiler: Eldrad Ulthran

returning?

I've already got Eldrad covered Sardaukar. He's rather pivotal to an upcoming major event.
Check out my debut fantasy novel from Fox Spirit Books, The Hobgoblin's Herald (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hobgoblins-Herald-R-Aston/dp/1910462047). If you've read it, please rate and review it on amazon; I'd be eternally grateful. The sequel, Eater of Names, is out in 2018, so watch this space.

Oh. Guess that mean I can't use the Doom of Malan'tai -inic in the short story I'm writing.

Sure you can SIngemeister. Bear in mind that these histories and stories are all in-universe. The eridani records are written by an AI which seems to be going a bit mad, the Shape of the Nightmare to Come was written by a demented, ancient Inquisitor under siege by fabius Bile, and Age of Dusk has two in-universe athors; one is an empathic psyker pillaging the warp archives of an alien library, and the other is writing histories based upont he previous author's mad scrawlings... ;)

I new it was worth logging in today. An excellent update. With all this technology, it is actually believable that the Magellans could defeat the Devourer fleets, even if barely.

Just an afterthought: if anything survives in LordLucan's story by the end, and the two empires manage to unite, some very interesting developments will come up for a 70k story :D .

I really liked the extensive notes you have on the post-scarcity Magellan reich, pre neo-devourer invasion.

Those Magellans are scary mofos at their height! :D How reduced are they when they eventually return to the galaxy? (Answer in spoiler tags if you don't want the Records spoile dfor your readers).

Spoiler: At their height they were able to move planets and entire star systems across and through the Warp and were matching the Pre-Fall Eldar civilisation and Panhumanity from the Golden Age of Technology, the Powers of the Transcend(Vernor Vinge's a Fire Upon the Deep) or the posthumans of Sid Meir's Alpha Centauri, surpassing the Culture (Culture Cycle novels), Forerunners (Halo) and Galactic Empire (Star Wars), with vast arcanotech, theotech and powerful sorcery at their height, with Dyson Spheres built around all their stars, to vast astronomical megastructures orbiting their systems. In Warhammerverse terms, they had the capability to match the Old Ones and Necrons (War In Heaven) techwise, but for reasons associated with someone capable of functioning in a post-scarcity environment, they restricted themselves to Information Age technologies and a simple, agrarian existence for the most part

We're talking theotech, arcanotech, nanotech, picotech, femtotech, Jupiter brains and artilects housed in nodes connected by wormholes and scattered across the entire system. They were manipulating the quantum foam of reality itself - reality warping through technology - at their highest tiers.

They had a vast population and industrial base, with a Nobilite caste that provided beacons for standard Warp navigation, Warp Relays linking star systems instantaneously powered by a fraction of the output of a star, Phased Dissassembler Arrays that reduced all materials to their component molecules through wormholes and could play havoc with spacetime. Supreme masteyr of baryonic and photino matter and energy, as well as all fundamental physical forces.

They similarly had Eldar subjects who coexisted (not very peacefully) as a protectorate within the Reich. Their souls were supposed to end up with Slaanesh but Khanda offered them a deal: a war of annihilation that they knew they would lose and the extinction of their race and any chance of survival outside the Milky Way, or they could have their Infinity Circuit soul-bound to him and their souls becoming a part of him, enjoying a relatively modest afterlife hanging around with Mon'keigh psykers, becoming vassals and protected people under his relatively benevolent empire, with their own holdings separate from the humans. They made the choice of survival.

But all of these were closely controlled and restricted via a system of government that granted a lot of autonomy but which was tied into Khanda Parashur via soul-binding of all the Great Artilects and Machine Minds of a computing power greater than 30e15 instructions/second (estimate is 36.8e18 to simulate a human brain in real-time).

All Astropaths, all Nobilite, all Navigators and any Psykers functioning in the military, government and private sector. Any and all Astartes who were Librarians or Sorcerors, Chaplains and Astartes of Captain grade or higher were soul-bound to Khanda. He learnt from the Horus Heresy and the First Age of Strife, so he followed that as a solution to preventing betrayal.

Those Neo-Devourers who encountered them unfortunately adapted to their technology and as a way to contain them and prevent them from being uleashed upon the universe, Khanda drew them into the heart of the galaxy and proceeded to fracture reality and supernova every star system within 1000 light-years of his throneworld.

It sounds a bit much but when you give AIs thousands upon thousands of years, extensive nanotechnology and experimentation, the sum total of human knowledge up to the Golden Age of Technology, access to Primarch DNA and a a whole bunch of transhumans, then extrapolate it by several millennia....you're going to get something like the Old Ones and/or Pre-Fall Eldar and Necrons in terms of technology. I don't want a Mary Sueish insertion affecting it. I give the background to make their fall even more obvious.

But this Fall of the Magellan Reich is something I'll touch upon when I get to writing the Neo-Devourer Wars. They awoke something sealed in the Magellannic Clouds. Sealed by the Void Dragon. An {Aberration} that comes from the same place as the Ophilim Kiasoz.

A brief quote about the Ophiloim Kiasoz from the Shape of the Nightmare to Come and a clue as to the {ABERRATION}:

[CENTRE]One passage informed us of what spread from the Gates. The great net, cast by theh unter Kurnous. A black net, forged with Vaul’s magic’s, Khaine’s hatreds. Subverted, driven into a new form. This black net wask nown as Kiasoz. Yet, when it was cast upon the Yngir known as Avelor, the breaker, the Yngir star-hungry wriggled free, and cast the net into the wasteland, the realm beyond the realm. The place where the Ophilim, the giodless ones, resided. Such wast he grim artifice present in the Kiasoz, it ensnared the greatest of the Ophilim, and drove it quite mad. Even Khaine feared to touch the black net, as the rending horror thrashed like a mad thing. When the war ended, and the realms finally sealed off, the outer realm, the realm not of the ether, and not of the other realms, was sealed too. As wast he Ophilim Kiasoz.

Until the Second Age of Strife, countless millions of years later.

Reports vary on the appearance of the foul force. All that is known is that, when the oPhilim enters a system, everyone dies, and the star at its heart withers like a rotten fruit. Ships which escape, claim it cannot be seen, though others say it can be seen only by the stars in the sky it obscures. Is it machine, is it living? We cannot know. How the Deceiver roused and/or tamed the thing, we also cannot know. All we can know is that is is free, and it is something…wrong.[/Spoiler]

Spoiler: The {ABERRATION} is an Ophilim. A Godless One that came from beyond. A Machine Great Artilect, in its curiosity, breached the boundaries of creation using Necron knowledge and Machina science. As the fleeting Pure Tyrannids and the Neo-Devourer came upon them...within the very depths of Magellan was an abomination that only the Void Dragon could have handled was unleashed upon the Materium.

The Magellan Reich within the Milky Way have a superior tech base to the Imperium Pentus and are on the whole comparable to the Tau Meta-Empire though superior in specific disciplines: gravity alteration, arcanotechnology, sorcery and biotech. Overall they still do not match the Eldar currently but do come close in certain areas. Their main advantages lie in gravity tech, mass production, computers, AI and sorcery. And one standard trope describes their overall military - Firepower.

In general, they have STC systems, Diamond Minds and Machina Stone Minds, Iron Men, gravity technology and the ability to build Dyson Swarms around a star, which they perform as a general rule and gives them an immense advantage in terms of industrial production and energy collection. Oh, and when it comes to attacking a Magellan system..well,Nicoll-Dyson lasers. Imagine all the satellites in a Dyson Swarm used as a phased array laser emitter. With the power output of a star.

Of course, that didn't save them from the {ABERRATION}, the Tyrannids and the Neo-Devourer....
