Search engines:
http://duotrope.com/index.aspx

Here's the list key:
Available. This company is currently accepting submissions if they don't do so year round.
Artistic only. Company is only interested in artists or art, not writers.
Adults only. Magazine is fairly risque, so be cautious if clicking on link.
Blacklisted. A black listed company that has stolen material submissions from authors and should be avoided.
Probationary. This is a new entry with no reputation. Submissions should be done carefully and checked for theft.

The Black Library:
Available. Bi-yearly, the Black Library has a submission window of about three months. The criteria is said to be pretty strict. Check the website for details.
National Novel Writing Month:
Every November, an opportunity to get published here comes about. Only prize seems to be recognition though.
Dark Horse:
Art, writing, coloring, inkists... Dark Horse leans more towards the artist side than the writing side, but they still demand solid writers.
Buzzy Mag:
Probationary. I've never heard of Buzzy Magazine, but they're looking short stories about sci fi and horror. They have a limit of about 10,000 and oddly enough, they want the submission by snail mail.
Weird Tales Magazine:
Robert Howard himself published to Weird Tales, and they exist to this day. Of course, at one point, Howard was having trouble getting paid, but I'm assuming they've gotten over those financial difficulties since then.
Heavy Metal:
Artistic only, adult only. Not many haven't heard of Heavy Metal, the magazine devoted to various fictional settings and lots of scantily clad women. They're only interested in art though.
Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine:
Probationary. Only looking for mystery and the like, such as police dramas. Think carefully before submitting.
Asimov's Science Fiction:
Probationary. They do not accept emails but rather have their own online submission form. Of note, they're looking for "character oriented" stories of science fiction and general fantasy. No Swords and Sorcery, and keep your sex and violence down.
Every Day Fiction:
Probationary. This is truly for those of us with a small idea. Every Day Fiction wants a very short piece of 1,000 words or less. They pay, but no more than $3 a story to a Paypal account. General fiction for adults is ideal, but keep it mild on the sex, violence and language.
Strange Horizons:
Probationary. These guys are all about fiction, but they have made it a point to publish a special page of what they've seen too much of already. Check out their links for details. The bottom line? No horror, no excessively detailed science stuff and no twist endings. And lay off the rape, people. GOSH!
Aberrant Dreams:
Probationary. A recent find from the Horror Factor hub (see below). They're interested in short stories and poems, but may open to accepting art later. They are currently back logged, so check back in a month or so to see when they're open.
Three Ravens:
They're looking for sci-fi, fantasy, cyberpunk and steampunk.

Other sources:
Ralan's Webstravaganza: Not an actual publishing site, but an updated list of companies that do.
Writer's Digest: Certain publishing companies require submitted work to be provided through a writing agent. You can check here to learn more about the inside business.
Horror Factor: Our latest catch, Horror Factor links to paying and non-paying submission companies.

Just going off my own thoughts about this but, submitting for Dark Horse in the Star Wars section must be a nightmare for any writer. So much research to do sheesh. I have tremendous respect for the NJO team because of the scope of what they did and how they coordinated it. Doing something like this without the backing of a team and completely on your own is commendable.

That said, this is an excellent resource IMO. Good job He2etic.

By the way, any idea when the next window will be after the May one for BL?

To the best of my knowledge, it hasn't been mentioned yet. I notice that He2etic has recorded that the BL submission window happens twice a year though - that's news to me, so I'd like to hear more details.

In the past, I've usually noticed a window opening at BL in spring and late fall. After the October window last year, I was told that another opening should occur this spring and sure enough, it'll open in May. If I'm wrong about another window opening in October or November this year, I will change my description.

BL's official talk is there is one yearly window and others may open from time to time if they so desire it. The last October Window opened only because Christian had a silly idea and had an anthology to fill.

I'd go even further and add that it is said to be totally pointless submitting SW stories (from SWFA, no less). They are destroyed without reading, apparently to avoid nuisance lawsuits (and because they are usually universally bad, anyway  ).

No-one gets to submit a star wars story. Like in Soviet Russia, the star wars stories choose you.

Hey, can you add Three Ravens Books to the list? They are the publishing house who are publishing my dark fantasy novel 'Life Eternal'. I know for a fact that they are accepting submissions (from unsolicited authors) for novel length pieces. They may also be running short story anthologies at a later date (I shall keep you informed).

The publishing house would suit authors here as they love dark themed work!

If anyone does submit to them, please feel free to say you saw the link here :)

Their website is as follows: http://www.threeravensbooks.com/

I would highly recommend giving them a go.

They are based in the USA.
My debut novel 'Life Eternal' is due out on august 1st 2011. Search 'Aaron J Booth' on facebook to see the cover art.

New sources. I'm just adding a comment so the publishing list subject appears to have "new additions" for people who read it.

I just stumbled across something that I'm quite surprised to see from quite a major UK publishing industry, Headline, and it turns out they accept unsolicited manuscripts as well: http://www.headline.co.uk/about.aspx. Although as far as I'm aware, the only genres that they want are: Literary, Thriller, Crime, Historical, Romance, Saga, Horror and Young Adult, and they don't want: Short Story Collections, Novellas, Children’s, Poetry, Plays or Erotica.

You really should have TTA Press on that list, they have three magazines that might be of interest to folks here: Interzone (SF and Fantasy), Black Static (Horror), and Crimewave (guess). http://ttapress.com/

Hi He2ic, if possible could you also add this magazine which I have been working with.

It's not sci-fi/fantasy per se on the literary side, however we have an open door publishing policy, basically, if your submission fits the theme for the issue (past themes have included: 'inside out', '2nd skin' etc) then we will consider your work regardless of genre. Previously we've featured literary fiction, poetry, queer fiction, drabbles, novel extracts etc. It's also worth pointing out that the magazine is a broad church arts magazine so, literature sits amongst art, fashion, philosphy, etc.

Submissions details are here http://slashstrokemagazine.com/submit/ the theme of the next issue is 'over there'.

Facebook page for the magazine here http://www.facebook.com/#!/slashstroke
Woop, woop! I finally have some fan fic on the bolthole.

Heads Up: Pseudopod podcasts will give you reasons why they refused your submission, assuming you get through their slush pile, rather than just a form Thanks But No Thanks. Just thought I'd let you know - I always find it something less of an ego-basher when they're able to take the time to do that.

Re: Publishing List GRAND SCRUBBING THIS WEEKEND

Postby He2etic » Thu Dec 13, 2012 7:05 pm

Assuming the Mayans weren't right, a new year is upon us.

This weekend, the publishing list is going to be revised. The mold wiped off, the dust blown away. Bad publishers will be moved off and the call is going out for new publishers.

As part of my new years resolution, I'm going to legitimately try to keep this up to date and check it once a week.
